Im a sophmore and just started playing soccer this year. I'm not a starter and i really want to prove that I can play good. I want to play defense. The problem is I basically have no motivation to play hard, people such as my mom and sister are putting me down saying I cant do it. I almost want to quit, but I need advice on how to get myself motivated and focused and more energized. Any soccer advice would be appreciated. =]
WHY YOU'RE NOT STARTING NOW:
Your coach is scared to put you in because he hasn't seen you play enough, not because he doesn't think you're good enough. Hang in there!
HOW TO PROVE YOU SHOULD START... and soon:
As a defender, you must be very aggressive and focused. Use every disadvantage of the opponent. If they're bigger than you, chances are you're faster. If you're taller, you can get the ball back up to your team before it even hits the ground. Think about your innate characteristics that you can use and don't be afraid.
Defense uses the wings. Receive the ball, take a touch if there's no pressure, and then send it up the side of the field to an open midfielder/forward on your team. LOOKING BEFORE YOU KICK immediately sets you apart from usual newbies!
If you come to practices and play with heart, your coach will notice.
ON MOTIVATION/FOCUS:
Watch Pele or Mia Hamm on youtube. That makes me want to go out and play soccer every day for the rest of my life. Oh, and search "soccer" or "world cup" on National Geographic: their article from 2006 by Brazil really inspired me.
Focus comes from wanting to win. You'll discipline yourself to be focused if you want to win, and be a player who contributed to that win.
ON ENERGY:
In the long run, think about running over the summer or joining your school's XC team. Because I run cross-country, my speed is still peaking when other players are getting tired.
For immediate results, eat protien and carbs. Drink water!
Don't quit. Soccer is an amazing sport- absolutely beautiful. As for your family, my parents tend to give me a rundown of everything I did wrong during a game or practice, just because they want to see me get better. You can prove yourself, and they'll soon forget they even said such things...
gor-loc answered Thursday March 27 2008, 10:09 pm: i dont exacly play as a defender but im am a goalie and people say the goalie is the captian of the defense. when our a defender you have to stay focused and listen to you goalie. whensome ap;proches you many like to try and kick the ballwhich is wrong instead you hold you your ground and dont let him get past you if he jukes you dont go after the ball without getting in the enemies way also dont be afraid to kick the ball out of play. also their is another captain of the defense the sweeper listen to the sweeper because without a doybt he is going to be the elite defender. finally protect the goal at all costs because if it gets by you the only thing standing in the way of a goal is a goalie. and dont listen to the other guy about the under classmen thing becuase its not true. its hard to be a beginner and starter b/c the others have more experince believe me. im a freshmen goalie and the only one not to be scored on and i dont start simply becuase the starter is a junior and more skilled than i am. believe my advice i promise it will help it helped others. i play on a club team and im on the high school team and i think that you being a sophomore, really shouldnt worry about it. the real reason why your probably not a starter is because of the whole dumb underclassmen thing. but, in order to be a starter you have to play hard, in defense just practice and practice by yourself and you eventually will get better and become a starter. to become more energized get at least 8 hours of sleep, eat healthy before and after a game, and DRINK SIX GLASSES OF WATER THE DAY BEFORE A GAME. i cannot stress how important this is. good luck!
