a stressful summer!!!

Question Posted Saturday August 12 2006, 12:26 pm

i'm a 14 year old girl and at the start of this summer i found out that i have scoliosis and pretty bad. i went back to the doctor later in the summer and now i have to wear a back brace. none of my clothes fit. my mom is taking me shopping and i would love some advice on how to stay stylish and hide the brace. i want to go back to school and still look good. this is all happening so fast and i just want to stay comfortable.

thanks!!

Well first dont listen to liza no one stares! I have had my brace for 2 years and im finally getting it over with this june. I understand it might be hard but dont feel too stressed its not THAT bad. anyways to clothes, hoodies are a life saver the hood covers alot. um i usually wear my hair down i have long hair so you dont see any imperfections where my brace might be, with sweatshirts you dont need to worry--they are the best! Umm i always wear a tanktop under EVERYTHING they are tight and they hold down the straps so they arent as noticible throught the shirt. Stripes or designs on shirts are good too, its really busy so you dont notice any bumps and try not to wear too tight shirts. Anyways its really not too noticable i always used to think it was but now i notice it isnt at all--no one is staring. And i still have some new friends that dont even notice or even suspect i have one. And just to tell you-- your friends will think its fine.:)
Hope i helped
Sam

My friend has the same thing. Try to find some cute tops that fit with your brace. When you go to school, people might look at you and stare, but don't worry what people say. After a few days, people won't mind. Your true friends won't mind that, and still be friends with you. I hope you look good when school starts.

awwwwww. i am so sorry. i have a back brace also for scoliosis. i know it is hard. the other things people said do help. but also. just explain to your friends why you have it. they will understand. i promise. i know its hard. but yes. dark colors. solids are best so then peoples attention isnt drawn to your body. wear your hair down. and smilee. it helps. and like i said before just explain what it is for. in the end the brace is good. im sorry again.

abercrombie and hollister make some adorable hoodies and some of them have fur at the top. if you want to hide the brace a bit more while wearing it, wear your hair down.

Try to wear clothing that looks a little baggier. Also, maybe a thicker material would be good, so you can't see the bumps from the back brace.
Dark colors would also be good, because it looks more solid, and also takes away from some of the buldge.

Good luck with everything, and I hope your back is better, I have a very mild case..so I kidna get what you mean!!
