philosophical thought about what's bad in society

Question Posted Thursday August 10 2006, 6:09 pm

so if people agree and think that smoking is bad and alcoholism is bad why do people think that suicidal-minded rock bands and stuff like that push the limiting line of "individualism" is not bad and is just being individually unique? surely you cant say that child pornography is just uniqueness that someone has that you shouldn't try to take away someone from doing because you dont wanna interfere with their individualism? or alcohol addictions or smoking? so what makes the difference?

i just dont understand beccause ive had a number of friends whos fallen into the wrong paths (serious depression cutting themselves and suicidal attempts and one actually killed herself :() after being "emo" and the "misunderstood kid" who's always considered herself depressed. i dont mean to label but a general trend was they listened to songs about deaths 24/7 and stuff. theres no hard proof that emo bands and their intense promoting of "individualism" and "being yourself" beyond the line cause these things but then again, there's no scientific proof that child porn is bad, it just is... so why wouldnt anyone agree with me?

ok i get what you are tryin to say, but you have to realize what you are comparing. You are tryin to compare "emo" and rock music to child porn and alchoholism and smoking. those are very diffrent things. first off drinking nad smoking arent really ways to make some one an idividual. ACtually alot of the time people start trying those thingd to be like everyone else, they are peer pressured into having their first smoke or first shot so that they are accepted and feel like they belong, child porn is a bit more unique but is wrong, its wrong just because its wrong because those children are innnocent and things like that are taking inncoence away from those children and the people that put kids into that are disgusting. The kids dont know whats going on, they dont fully understand what is happening. And for the music, music is an art form, its a way of exspression, just like painting or poetry or acting. Its a way for the person writing/singing the song to vent out their emotions and give out a message and idea to who ever will listen. Sure some times the music is questionable but thats just from diffrent points of veiws. Just because a song has soem depressing points doesnt mean that its goin to make people go out and kill them selves especially rock/metal/"emo" music. Music is some thing people can relate to, and it isnt something anyone should try to censor or change, because self exspression shouldnt be limited.

I believe that the same people that think smoking and alcoholism is bad also think that the rock bands and punk groups are bad influences on the society as a whole. Who you are on the outside tells who you are on the inside. The way you dress, act, and even talk can show the true you.

i totally agree with you that lyrics that promote suicide suck. like i read about some kids that heard the lyrics "just do it" or something and they commited suicide. but not all music labeled "emo" is bad. and being yourself is usually mentall healthier than, well, trying to impress people. but if yourself (or your friends) is someone that is hurting they need to find a way to be happy in thier own skin (counseling or maybe a different home situation). then they shouldn't want to feel like killing themselves or listening to people trying to kill themselves. as for those bands they need help to but unfortunatly we can't be all "hey shut up your making my friend feel bad" becuase maybe telling people is just how they feel better. i'm sorry we can't change the world and make eveyone understand and feel better but atlest we can try to help our friends.

To be honest, I can see your point but they are two totally unrelated scenarios.

Child pornography, the example you have used, is bad for obvious reasons. It is depraved and robs children of the innocence they have a right to.

I agree with you to some extent on the rock bands that seem to promote negative feeling. There are plenty of them out there that sing about suicide, death and that awful black place that you can fall to when depressed, and it is something I often refer to as "Music to slit your wrists to", because that is what it seems to be for in a lot of cases. With no discernable tune in a lot of cases, it seems its only purpose is dwelling on the most negative aspects of life and death and it seems that in a world which is already full of death and destruction, this is the last thing people who might already be on a rock ledge need to listen to.

That being said, music is considered a form of expression and as all persons involved are consenting and not deliberately intending harm to others, there really isn't a lot that can be done about it. I do agree that music can have a strong effect on people's emotions and from experience, I know that those suffering frm depression find that form of expression comforting. Perhaps because misery loves company, who knows?

The point is that yes, there is a lot of bad things in this world that thousands of us don't agree with and chances are, they all contribute to rising suicide, aggression and other behaviour that is considered anti-social. However, they cannot ban the depressing music because of rights to expression, they cannot ban alcohol when the majority of people can enjoy it responsibly, they cannot ban smoking because there would be a huge public uproar and all in all, as much as it would be nice, it wouldn't be worth it for the repercussions.

Child porn is terrible because it exploits children who are unable to consent or make decisions to be abused in that way. It damages young people- who have no say in the matter- for the rest of there lives. It is a gigantic abuse issue and is in no way shape or form related to free speech and expression. An adult is free to exploit themselves, but not someone who is doing it against they're will or can not make the decision for themselves. People can choose the music they want to listen to (and make) and what they want to do with it, just like people can choose to buy a knife and decide whether they want to use it to cut themselves or their food. Everyone is free to do what they want with their own bodies and minds, although much help is available for those to want to hurt themselves and need help to stop. But if you don't want to stop...you have the right to go right ahead.

First of all there is scientific proof that child porn is bad, as a mental health professional I can give you numerous articles and studies that prove this. As for your question music does not make people do anything promoting individualism is actually a positive thing, it helps self esteem what the problem may be is that listening to songs about death and then hanging out with people who are also depressed creates a cycle of depression which makes a person feel worse and worse until there is no "light" at the end of the tunnel and they see no alternative but suicide or self-harm.

You can't group all emo music as bad, just like you can't judge all rap music gangsta, at the end of the day music and musicians can't make you do anything its a choice being an individual is a good thing, but how individual are you if you are following what a band or group of people tell you?

There is a different between stoping someone from harming themselves or others and between being an individual, a good example would be Hitler, he was trying to be an individual and extinguish all Jewish people but his individuality should not supercede that of others.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Well, I don't necessarily agree that all these bands and being emo is the cause of people going out and trying to hurt themselves. I think it starts from them not feeling any self-worth and then they find these bands that they feel they can connect with. Then they go out and do things they shouldn't do, it's like their best friend egging them on to do something. Just like I don't believe that violence in video games, tv, and movies motivate people to acts of violence. Rather, it depends on the person and what they're life is like.
