"i.e." means "that is". It is used when you want to restate something in different words, explicate the meaning of a word/phrase, or give a complete list.

**i.e. should always have periods after each letter and a comma after the second period

Example:
The administration, i.e., the president and vice presidents, attended a retreat.

A lot of people said that "i.e." means "for example". That is not true.

"e.g." means "for example".
