I'm going to be a freshman at the University of Texas this falls and I have no idea what I want to major in. I know still have like 2 years to decide but I have nothing. I mean, most people have at least an idea or a few things in mind and others have known what they want to be since they were 13. I've already been to orientation and I've spoken with an academic advisor but still nothing. I was just wondering when it was that you guys decided what you wanted to do in life.
You can also go on the internet to find different tests that might gear you toward the career you may want to do. U of T should have something like that though.
Sometimes the tests are kind of long. And sometimes it seems as if they are asking you the same question. Just be patient and give the answer that is closest to how you feel.

You should try taking a variety of classes and pick out the ones that you really like and pursue those. Also try taking a variety of summer jobs. that way, you have an idea of what you like doing. Also was there a way to have both. I looked at what made me happy, what did I enjoy doing and how to incorporate that into a career.
Keep in mind that most people change careers 2-4 times in their lives, and if you ask most people they don't work in the field they thought they would when they were getting their education.
We all worry about this decsion when we are your age because it seems that it is soooooo big and if we make a mistake then we are ruining our lives, just try and relax and the right choice will come to you. Experiment with different classes and you will figure it out!!
more_than_a_feeling answered Tuesday July 18 2006, 8:10 pm: Take a couple of classes that you have even the slightest interest in, even if they're not gen eds or a requirement for a degree you're working towards. See what you like, meet new people, try new things. Be patient with yourself and eventually you'll find your way. We all do.
