Perms and Swimming Pools...

Question Posted Saturday July 8 2006, 8:27 pm

hey! i recently permed my hair (about 3 weeks ago) and while i was at the salon, the stylist told me that i cant swim in swimming pools because the perm will come out. origionally, this wasnt a problem, but i separated my shoulder and now have to get in the pool (head under also) for physical therapy. is my perm going to come out?

Well from personal experiance (I get a perm every two months), your hair dresser is right. Going in the pool could cause the perm to come out and it to become damaged(also the chemicals in the pool could damager your hair, especially because you have a perm). BUT since you have had your hair permed for 3 weeks, it shouldnt really damage your hair. Try wearing a swimming cap, it might help to stop the water from coming in.

you can swim. normally perms are good for swimming after about 1-2 weeks.

The perm should be set for now, so swimming should be okay. However to be on the safe side I'd use a swimmers shampoo that helps minimize damage from chlorine.

Usually I only hear that you can't get your hair wet within like the first 48 hours or something, but maybe the rules change for the pool because of the chlorine or something. My advice is if you're really worried, go back to the salon and ask them. They're the experts. But, the easier thing to do would be just pin your hair up and put a swimming cap on.

Well to the girl under me, getting your hair dyed and getting a perm are two very different things.

Anyway, I always thought that you just couldn't get your hair wet within 24 or 48 hours (I don't remember which).

What I would do is just put your hair up and wear a shower cap or something like that just incase.

It is best to follow the hairdressers advice. I'm not sure it will make it come out, but could damage it or not make it last as long as it should.
Wear a swimming cap. ;]

I think it will be fine. I know its like that when you dye your hair. I dye mine and your not supposed to go swimming cuz your hair will turn green..But a week after i dyed mine, i went swimming and it was fine. So, i say you should be okay.

:) Good luck
