At many craft stores, they have a section just for scrapbooks and scrapbooking items. You can get photo borders to jazz up your pictures.
Stickers are also good. Many stores have stickers with themes (sports, graduations, prom, school, etc.). There are also usually little books full of stickers with words or quotes in them, and they usually run for $4-$5 a book.
Stamps look good, too!
Markers are also important to have. Personally, I like giving each page a certain color scheme (pink and red, blue and yellow, etc.) to make it look neat and organized. Be careful with Sharpies, though; Make sure they don't bleed through the page.
As for words and text, stencils of letters work well. So do stickers with letters on them, and glue-on letters. Usually, though, I just write what I want to on each page with markers.
Oh, and DEFINITELY use a glue stick to glue anything down. Glue that comes in a bottle could get pretty messy!

Its kind of hard to give tips because every page is unique and special but i would say investing in a laminator(about $20) and gel pens is also a good idea
because the gel pens make the letter on the page pop and sparkle
