16/F, You know that typical story of if the most popular guy likes a girl who is considered a geek/loser that everyone likes to pick on and his friends don't approve by saying that you're reputation will be ruined etc. Then his friends would give them both a hard time in school. I'm in that type of situation and I'm wondering why does this happen?

A geek is someone who has a high interest or intelligense in something, and usually wears glasses to them. We are all interested in something, so it goes to show that were all geeks in some way! To them, the hot guys get the hot girls and the geeks get the geeks or no one. This is'nt true but does happen through teen life. Maybe that guy is going out with you because:
a) You two have an interest
b) He likes you for who you are, and not what you've got.
c) He finds you interesting
Teenagers usually grow out of it when they are in there 30's lets say. Some are that silly, that they might never get it out of their head.
Just ignore what they say. Maybe their jelouse because he's going out with a nice girl like yourself. Let them stay in their geeky world.

OhSoFamous answered Saturday June 10 2006, 10:52 am: I think this happens because naturally, the most popular guy in the school should have the most popular girl. It's pretty much the food chain.
When the popular boy goes for the geeky girl, its breaking the food chain. All his friends step in and say 'Why would you go for her when you could have HER?' so yeah, it's amazingly stupid but then again so is human nature in general.
If this guy really likes you he'll forget about what everyone else thinks and start thinking about how much you mean to him and he means to you.
Chicken_flavored_eggs answered Saturday June 10 2006, 10:17 am: People are not all scum. Gross generalizations like that bother me. Anyway, it happens because the atomsphere in a high school setting is very class based. There is a hierarchy with who is cool and who is not and it makes for some pretty poisionous behaviour.
People make fun and taunt and torture because they don't have the maturity to see differently. There is a lot of pressure to be cool and be liked, or you are the one who is cast out and taunted and tortured. No one wants to be that person. High school makes people act in stupid ways. I acted very stupid and did lots of dumb shit I wouldn't do now. If this relationship makes it, it will be because both the jock and the geek realize that being cool isn't what is important. It is about being happy and doing the best you can. [ Chicken_flavored_eggs's advice column | Ask Chicken_flavored_eggs A Question ]
Eustachius answered Saturday June 10 2006, 3:27 am: To put it simply: because humans are scum.
You've been labled; probably since you started school you've carried a lable that others see. Stereotyping, essentially. Labels are almost a form of "class" in schools. You step out of your "class" and you're persecuted for rattling people's cages and screwing up "the way things work." It's done because many of the popular teens feel that they HAVE to have lables, as it gives them their little groups where they can feel special. Once they get out into the real world, none of that is going to matter, though. The reason you're being persecuted is that you're standing up to this structure, almost a revolution, you might say. And it makes people who believe they have "power" very nervous. (good on you!) They don't like it when someone defies lables like that. It's sad, pathetic, superficial... yeah. But that's most teens for you. Sorry that you're caught up like this.
The best thing to do would be this: talk to the guy about it. If he's understanding and sees what these people are doing, AND is willing to not let it bother him, he's a great guy. A person who can withstand that type of pressure is one in a million. Don't let these people push you around and tell you what you are and who you're "allowed" to love. Giving in to them will tell them that they have power over you, and that's what they crave. Don't give them that satisfaction.
Hollister answered Saturday June 10 2006, 2:52 am: if your a popular jock, you are expected to have a popular cheerleader girlfriend right? it happens because his friends are worried that the boy will make them lose their 'status' as being popular. it is so retarded i know.
