i really really really want to know how to successfully make my hair have "beachy" waves. i tried spritzing a mixture of salt and water in my hair but no it looks gross. is there any real way to do this? btw, I have thin brunette hair that is just below the shoulders.

You spray it on damp hair, twist it around your fingers a little bit, scrunch it, and blow dry. I really like it. They also sell styling mousse-looking-stuff near the cream rinse, but I haven't tried that yet.
