Body acne.

Question Posted Saturday May 27 2006, 5:26 pm

I'm a 16 year old female. I've never had problems with acne on my face but ever since I was about 13, I've had embarrassing acne on my chest and back. I've tried everything (ProActive, Acne-Free, all kinds of prescription creams and pills, etc) and the only thing that's ever worked was tanning on a tanning bed. I'm not sure why that works but after going a couple of days, my skin was totally clear.

Anyways, now, my parents don't want me to tan and I don't know what to do because I can't wear a bathing suit or any kind of revealing clothing at all because the acne is so obvious.

So is there any obscure, rarely heard of kind of treatment that I would be able to use to cure this acne? What is it that made sitting in a tanning bed make my acne go away?

Thank you so much.

well, the reason the tanning booths worked was because it dries out your skin. another technique would be to lay outside- in the provacy of your backyard in your bikini and sun out there. but a med i would definetely suggest is nature's cure. they sell it at osco, and walgreens. it comes with a month's supply of pills and spray. you take one pill at nigt. one in the morning. the spray you have to use a few times a day. its bout ten dollars a box- but worth it- because it lasts a month. as long as you remember to use it wen your spost to- it shuld work. another option i dont think your parents would let you use is birth control. birth control zaps acne because it reduces the hormones that produce it. your last option would be to see a dermatologist. myne prescribed a cream for me. that really dried out my skin- to the point where i had to stop using it- cuz it was so embarassing. but it worked for the time i did use it. really hope i helped.

I can understand completely the concern your parents have regarding the probability of your getting malignant melanoma. This is a very real and probable outcome if you are exposed to the wrong kind of uv rays. But, there are burgeoning studies now that are concluding that it's important for us to get some sun because it is the best source of vitamin D. There are a myriad of vitamin D deficient diseases that are developing in our country today such as rickets that were thought to be non-existent. They are re-emerging because of a vitamin D deficiency. The reason I am explaining all of this is because I feel that part of your problem is a vitamin D deficiency. There are a couple of ways we can approach this problem. One is that you can continue to get "some" sun. Now what I mean by that is that you can only go out into the sun for 10 minutes a day and that would have to be before 11:00 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. You can also start taking vitamin D supplements. I've included some websites for you to look at that will have information on them w/pros and cons so that you and your parents can read the information and make an educated decision as to what you can do. Another supplement you may want to add to this will be MSM. MSM is a type of sulfur that has magnificent effect on the skin. You cannot overdose on MSM because your body will expel any excess w/in 12 hrs. But, it is my suggestion that you not exceed 500 mg in a day. I take 1000, but I'm an adult.

Something I want to explain before I get into some other treatments that you can try. Acne is one of the ways your body attempts to detox. What you have to do is take a good look at your diet. Are you eating a lot of fast foods, sodas, refined sugar, etc? These foods are filled w/chemicals (they are synthetic and your body doesn't want them in there)which when ingested have to come out someplace and one of them is acne. Something you should consider is cleaning up the foods you eat. Eat more fresh organically raised foods. That means vegetables, fruits, eggs, meats, dairy, etc. and eliminate processed foods and most of all cut out the white sugar products. If you're hooked on sweets like I am you can substitute it with a marvelous sweetener called AGAVE. It is made from the juice of a cactus and tastes a little bit like caramel and tastes great in everything. It also does not have the same reaction in the body as sugar does so even diabetics can have it. Break yourself in with these fresh new foods a little bit at a time. You will start to see improvement and as you start to see that you will want to go further w/it.

There are also treatments I have found that are very simple and easy to come by w/o a lot of money. Break open an egg and separate the yolk from the white then brush the white all over areas that you experience acne. At first only leave it on for 15 minutes at a time. You can start off doing it everyday because it is not harmful to you unless you are allergic to eggs. I leave it on for hours, but I've been doing it for years. It's also a great face-lift for those who are looking for an economical way to achieve that goal. Your skin will feel amazing after each treatment and you will soon love doing it. Also, you can go to your local drug store and pick up a product called Alpha Hydrox. It's in a red box and you want to start of w/an 8% alpha hydroxy. You can eventually work yourself up to a 10% formula, but you have to do it gradually depending upon your skins reaction to it. So, if you decide to go w/ the 10% formula you will need to do a spot test first. With both formulas start off doing it once the first week, twice the second week, three times the third week, until you are able to do it every night. Now, if you should decide to go this route you cannot go out into the sun. What this does is exposes fresh new skin cells that will be highly sensitive to the sun. This method does work but you cannot do both the sun and a alpha hydroxy. So, if you choose this method simply take vitamin D supplements and you will be covered. To add to whatever method you choose you can start doing a sea salt scrub once a week. Have you ever noticed that when you go into the ocean your skin clears up? Well it does and this will help as as well.

I hope I was able to come up with some ideas for you. Good luck and I wish you well!

PS: THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE YOU CAN TRY. YOU MAY BE ALERGIC TO THE LAUNDRY SOAP YOUR FAMILY IS USING. THAT'S WHY YOU ARE ONLY GETTING THE ACNE ON YOUR BACK AND CHEST AREA. THERE ARE LAUNDRY SOAPS OUT THERE THAT ARE FOR ALLERGIES AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SAFE ONES IN YOUR HEALTH FOOD STORES. TRY SOME OF THEM. I'VE HAD FRIENDS WHO HAVE HAD THAT SAME REACTION TO LAUNDRY SOAP. IT JUST DAWNED ON ME TODAY THAT IT COULD BE THIS. THE OTHER STUFF I TOLD YOU TO DO WILL STILL BE BENNIFICIAL, BUT I'LL LAY ODDS THAT IT'S SOME KIND OF ALERGIC REACTION. ALSO YOU MAY HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN AND CANNOT WEAR SYNTHETIC CLOTHES. YOUR SKIN MAY NEED TO BREATH, SO YOU MAY HAVE TO STICK W/NATURAL FIBER CLOTHING SUCH AS COTTON, BAMBOO, WOOL, ETC.

Your skin needs to breathe so just wash it as much as you can and eat one mango and 20 walnuts a day. You'll see fast results, just don't think about and don't give up.
