It's quite natural for us to blame ourselves if something bad happens but it really doesn't sound as though you did anything wrong. Dogs like to run, and their evolutionary awareness hasn't caught up with cars yet so they don't tend to consider them.
If you were letting him out to put him on a chain for safety, you were looking after his wellbeing, no one could blame you for that. Accidents happen unfortunately and it's awful for you and your family. It's understandable you feel bad about it.
Don't stress about not going to the vet with him, after what happened it would have been too much for you to cope with. That's normal too.
All you can do at this stage, regardless of the outcome, (and I hope it's a good one), is to be there to offer support and hopefully receive it as well.
If he recovers, is there some way of preventing this from happening again? Maybe keep him on a leash until you have him chained or close a gate?
That would also show your family that you are concerned and would like to make sure he or another dog in the future would be safer.
Hope that helps and the best of luck to you.

I know you feel bad, I have had that same thing happen before and I felt terrible too..for years afterwards. Dogs will be dogs, and we try to force them to live in a human society, but their natural instinct is to run. If you would have caught the dog in the street, you could have been hit by a car too. It's not your fault, it happens..they get sick, they get injured. It was an accident not neglect, that's different. So just say a little prayer and think positive, but most of all it won't help to blame yourself.

All I can say is, things happen. I've never had a dog get hit by a car but I've owned many dogs (currently own 3 inside dogs) and have had many die.

It's natural for you to blame yourself, but you just need to remember that's not your fault. Dogs run away, mine ran away the other day, but didn't get hit. My preacher said there's something in the Bible about God in heaven with all of the animals, so if you're Christian you can look forward to that.

You also don't need to feel bad about not going to the vet. You already feel bad enough as it is, and the only thing you can do is pray and remember the good memories. Hopefully your dog will be ok.

You had to let the dog out, what were you supposed to do? The dog chose to run out into the street..so it's not your fault! The dog didn't know any better. I know you probably feel bad, I love dogs and their awesome...but what happened happened...hopefully he makes it and if he doesn't, dont blame it on yourself because he was the one who ran into the street. Just hope for the best! Hopefully this helps you a little, but I know the pain of almost losing a dog. I'ts hard.
