Question Posted Wednesday May 24 2006, 8:38 am

i think i may have OCD. i've read up on it and i have all the symptoms. i especially struggle with "obsessions" as in i get one little thought stuck in my head and i think about it over and over for months.
i've tried doing everything i can about it, but to no avail. i spoke to my mum about it but she thinks its just worry and stress. she won't take it at all that i may have a mental illness. i really want to see a therapist or a doctor, but i'm only 17. my question is, could i see someone without my mum finding out? like i said, i can't talk to her about it. if not, what's something i can do to help myself until i turn 18 and can see a doctor myself? it's really starting to affect and has been persisting for over a year now. please help me. thank you

I am obsessive-compulsive so I know what you are going through. You just need to let your mom know specifically what is going on and exactly how it is affecting your life.

The only way I can really imagine you seeing a doctor about it if your mom doesn't want to take you to a therapist is that the next time you see your general practitioner for anything at all, when they make your mom go out of the room, let him know and he'll probably get you a referral to therapy...your mom probably won't argue if the doctor thinks it's necessary, and if the therapist diagnoses you as obsessive-compulsive, she'll know for sure that that's what it is.

my boyfriend has the same thing. He has thoughts that wont go away and he cant stop thinking about things. His head buzzes. He really hates it, as he cant concentrate on things. He had to have medication (citalopram)He wasnt diagnosed as OCD though, he was classed as a symptom of depression. He is much better on the meds. I think you need to talk to someone about this, like if not your parents, then a school counsellor, or a friends parent. Do you have older bros or sis's, you really need to be advised by someone, who can actually help you do something about it. I hope you can find someone who can direct you to the doctor. Why cant you see the doc yourself? Why do you have to be 18?
I live in australia, so dont really understand the laws you have there.
But good luck. See someone soon, huh.

If it's distressing you, you should see a doctor. Yes you can see one without your mum finding out. They are not allowed to say anything. If the doctor agrees with you, they will refer you to a therapist who deals with this type of problem.
Try not to think of it as a mental illness, lots of people have OCD and continue to lead relatively normal lives. You learn how to deal with it.
Your mum probably is in a bit of denial, no parent wants to think there may be a problem with their child, even if it's one that can be treated. Try to talk to her again, quietly tell her how you feel, and that it's treatable.
If you really feel you can't approach your mother, see the doctor anyway. The sooner you start to deal with this, the sooner you will be able to move on with your life.
Best of luck.

Everyone has something that they obsess over and aparently yours is in your thought process and how you think. Its ok to have OCD as long as it doesnt start affecting the way you live and your life fully. Some people have more problems than others you can always check your self into a hospital if you think its that bad but its perfectly fine really. Everyone obsesses about something even me. So dont worry to much about it and try to live normal. I have to be a perfectionist so if i dont do something right the first time i get mad. See everyone has something wrong its just a matter of how far you take it. Hope iv helped a little write back id love to hear how this turns out.

hey i think that you definitely need to see a doctor so: you need to find a way to make that happen. either try and go in there by yourself, and if you can't get one of your grandparents that could count as a 'guardian' to go in there with you to sign some papers. you don't have to tell them the real reason your going in, but you can if you want. then if you go in and you are diagnosed with OCD then your mom will have to find out but it will be ok with her that you went to the doctors afterall, because you found out something you needed to know. mom's don't always want to think of the worst that could be happening to their siblings, so they discard it from being true..thats what i think. but definitely find a way to go see a doctor. xoxo helpachick
