Clicky jaw

Question Posted Monday May 22 2006, 5:01 am

My jaw makes a dull click sound every time I yawn. Is this just going to go away after a while, or should I be more concerned and go to the doctors?

A lot of people have this. If you have pain in your jaw, or frequent headaches on that side of your head it would be a good idea to see a Dr. Otherwise don't worry about it as you grow and change it might stop on it's own.

The 'cracking' is a fleshy bit of some sort (muscle or tendon or somesuch) rubbing over a bit of bone near the jaw joint. Over time it can wear things away and procuce some quantity of unpleasant results.

It's probably not be significant enough to warrant treatment of any sort, but if it gets worse (starts happening when you're not yawning; talking or eating or whatever) I'd recommend talking to someone about it. An orthodontist is probably the best person to consult, but most dentists should be well-informed enough to make a recommendation.

This just means that you are cracking your jaw. It's basically the same thing as cracking your knuckles, neck, back, wrist, ankles etc. but it's just a different body part. The sound you here is the bones rubbing together. Try not to do it a lot because cracking any part of your body is not "good" for you. It's not bad, but you know the saying of how cracking your knuckles *might* give you arthrides, so maybe cracking your jaw could cause a problem. Of course the whole arthrides thing is just a myth, and might have been used to get people to stop doing it because the sound was annoying, but people swear that they've had problems from cracking body parts too much. If you'd like to be on the safe side, you could always see a doctor. It never hurts. Better safe then sorry. I wouldn't be too concerned about your jaw and have it the top thing on your list, but going to the doctors would always be the safe thing to do. If you'd like more information about cracking your jaw I did a little research for you and found a site. ( [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) ) If you'd like another site then just go to google or another search engine and type in "cracking your jaw" and it will come up with tons of stuff! Best of luck and if you have more questions then just ask me in my inbox. :)

Your jaw is just cracking or the disk is slipping in and out of place.
If it get's painful, extremely loud, or your jaw gets locked in place go see your doctor.
