It will be such a small amount of blood at first that you probably won't notice until you go to the toilet and notice on the toilet paper.
Also just carry a small applicator tampon and a small pad with you in your bag. If the ones you have feel thick you could try a lower absorbancy, but I dont like to use them at all!
As for the tampons, the first time I tried to use a tampon at school I FAILED lol. The trick is to stay calm, relax, and push it towards your back. Push the smaller tube S-L-O-W-L-Y into the bigger one so it doesn't feel as weird as its going in. After that you shouldnt be able to feel it. [ Alicee95's advice column | Ask Alicee95 A Question ]

The way you are obsessing about this, I'm gonna guess that you haven't had your period yet. Relax. It's not as bad as you think it will be. You already appear mature-minded enough to be prepared so you're ahead of the game.
Go to the store and purchase some panty liners, but the unscented ones. These are so small you won't even remember you're wearing it. Wear one every day until you get your period. They are small but absorbent enough to catch any flow when it starts. Remember, your period will not just gush out like a faucet. It will begin with brown spotting then increase as the hours and days pass. You will have ample time to handle the situation.
When you notice the spotting, just change to a more absorbent pad. If the ones you tried feel like a diaper, just purchase the ultra thin pads. Very comfortable and you can wear them with jeans.
One more thing, please do not insert petroleum jelly into your vagina. You will get an infection. Please only use water soluble lubrication. That is why KY Jelly was invented.
Overall, don't obsess. You seem well-prepared and will have enough time to be hospitable to your visitor when she arrives ;)

Either way, it's best to be safe and keep a pad with you at all times. They may be uncomfortable but if you can't get a tampon in it may be your last resort. Keep an extra in your book bag at all times so you'll have it when you need it.
Putting in a tampon took me a long time and I didn't get it on my first try. Practice at home if you can.
Trying when you aren't on your period makes it harder since you aren't moist for it to slide in easily, so you could put petroleum jelly on the applicator if you want to try that. I first got it in by laying on my bed and spreading my legs wide open. It might hurt going in the first few times, but if its in place properly (all the way up your vagina) you won't even feel it. Now that I regularly use tampons it isn't an issue and I can get them in and out easily. It's all about practice and getting used to them.
Don't stress about it, it will happen one day if not today.
