I had an average rating of 4.97 yesterday. Someone had posted a question where they asked for people's opinions on a situation that had arisen with a family member. A 'do you think this is right?' type question. I posted my answer, along the lines of "depending on age/etc, perhaps you could speak to their parents about this."
I understand people can rate you however they wish but I got a 2 for it! I admit I object to this anyway but the question has since been deleted and I'm just wondering why ratings stand on deleted questions. Because of this person's unfair rating, I've dropped in one moment from 4.97 to 4.93.
In general, I am wondering if it would make sense to null and void ratings you receive for questions that have been deleted?

Scribble answered Friday May 5 2006, 3:50 am: Seriously, I don't answer that many questions as I don't often have regular access to the internet (I travel a lot) so my rating is a fairly transient thing. I understand how ratings are important but I just thought I'd let you know that to me, a rating of over 4/4.5 shows that you are definately helping people and is something to be proud of. A round number of five can also ring warning bells to me- I reckon I could get a perfect rating if I kissed ass and only answered simple questions, but what would be the point?
kristen22 answered Thursday May 4 2006, 1:59 pm: In a way I do understand where you are coming from but then again, this also makes sense, if your going to null/void the raitings from deleted questions then this wouldnt help you to much as when someone that gave you a 5 deleted there question then your raiting would go back down again as if that 5 they gave you never existed. Thus making the rate my advice pretty useless. [ kristen22's advice column | Ask kristen22 A Question ]

I never give advise that I don't truly think could be bennificial to someone, yet if it isn't the flowery feel good answer they want to hear they will rate you negatively. My ratings have dropped as low as 4.85. You can read my colomn and see that I don't insult or degrade people because of the situations going on in their life. But I wouldn't worry about such a minor drop in ratings. You will have them back up in no time. I know, it has happened to me so many times. I just keep on going and give advice to the best of my ability. That is all you can hope for.

Or to help other people? i bet you like to help people and you love to give advice and like to help others out the best to your ability. I know it makes no sense because i see how you could have come up with the answer you did. You don't deserve a 2 by any means. You could at lest of gotten a 4. Just pay no mind to it. That isn't really the reason the majority of us are here right? People put way to much emphasis on their ratings.
Dangernerd said one time that a rating of 5 should actually be a rare thing. Anyone who answers a lot of questions...and who doesn't just
kiss ass and tell people what they want to hear, most likely will not have a high rating. People actually give a rating of 5 way to often.
You probably shouldn't have gotten a 2 for your opinion but it happens. You didn't tell the questioner what he/she wanted to hear. If it bothers you very much, just don't answer those types of questions. Though we all just can't resist risking it now and then!
As it says in the most recent site news, most of the questions are here forever, (even if they are deleted from the main pool of questions). A lot of the questions are deleted after a very short time by level one moderators. If no ratings counted after questions were deleted we wouldn't have much to work with.
