Question Posted Wednesday April 26 2006, 6:44 pm

16/f
My school's choir is doing a cabaret show and I have a solo in the song "Popular" from the play Wicked. I can sing the solo very well but I have a problem with singing infront of my class. I can sing infront of other people just not infront of the class. I need to practice with everyone so I can get it down perfectly. So, my question is... How do I get rid of my nerves or atleast be able to sing without a shakey voice? I try to tell myself they will judge me no matter how I sound but it doesn't seem to help.

Additional info, added Wednesday April 26 2006, 8:48 pm:
I have no problem with SPEAKING infront of people. I debate and I'm comfortable with SPEAKING. I think it's mostly that I'm self conscious about my voice, I don't like my classmates to judge me. I have some pretty stuck up people in my class so I know if I mess up they will definately talk about it and tear me down..

try singing in front of a mirror right before you sing for your class, and when you're up in front of them, close your eyes. it helps.

heh.well, glad it all went well ha :)

ah, trust me, you arent the only one.

try at first with your eyes closed, like they arent there (if your teacher lets you)

if you know other people like you, and you have the solo almost perfect, dont even worry if people say stuff about it.

and if people make fun of you, they are just jealous. :)

good luck with the solo...

popular...your gonna be popular...

Nervousness is usually caused by lack of confidence in your own abilities- so I think that possibly recording yourself singing the solo, anylizing your sound, and making improvements could help a lot. And plus, your choral director most likely gave you this solo for a good reason, he or she probably believes that you can sing it better than anyone else could. Also, practicing it in front of a mirror can help a lot. Practice, practice, practice until it becomes second nature. And also, you can relax because you've already gotten the part, you don't have to audition again.

Another thing is that (in the grand scheme of things) it doesn't really matter what your peers think of your singing, it only matters what your choral director thinks. If he or she thinks you're doing it well, then you are! Just laugh to yourself if you hear anyone gossiping about your performance. Chances are, they're probably just jealous! Good luck! :)

I remember my solo in our choir concert. I had to sing a song from the Big Band Era. My music teacher gave me good advice, she told me to look just above the audience's heads and not look at them so it really actually looks like you're watching them but you're just staring at the wall.

It takes practice, don't be nervous, if there are any other people doing solos, I'm sure that they have an equal part in being nervous also.

maybe it can help, but other than that i would just practice singing in front of the class and do it more because you get more comfterbal with it which gets you over it!

I hope you have adobe reader because this seems to be a great article on stage nerves. If you don't have it (almost everyone does I think), it should prompt you to download it. It is safe to do so. :)
