1st time @ a gynocolegist

Question Posted Wednesday April 26 2006, 3:15 pm

okay - so i have a gyncologist appt. in a month, and i am sooooo nervous. i don't know what to expect! i'm going to the same one as my mom, so i'm guessing he's a pretty normal guy. my mom asked me if i wanted a girl instead, but i really didn't think it would matter (and it doesn't, it's still as nervewrecking to me). what should i do? like .. before i go? do i need to like .. shave? lol i don't know what to expect either - like my mom told me he does a breast exam and that i have to lay down and he has to stick a q-tip like thing in to check for cancers and stuff. but what does it feel like .. or like .. what else should i expect?!

help! ♥

Thsi is something we all have to do...its not necessary to shave. I shave mine but i'm comfortable with that. If you feel uncomfortable with your vaginal hair...you dont have to shave it...you can also trim it so its not as "out of control"...There are so many people out there with different sizes shapes and amount of hair. Everyone is born with it, if it was such a big deal and causes cancer? the doctors would tell you to shave it off...no offense who answered you last but...honeslty...its not as big as a deal as she made it sound...ive had plenty of gyno. appts and the first one was very nurve racking...but they tell you if you feel uncomfortable to say somthing dont feel frightened or embarrassed if you feel awkward and want him to stop it is perfectly normal...especially when no one else has ever touched you there before...I hope i helped you in some way...Well GOOD LUCK next month and i hope all goes well....The best of luck to you!!!

There's not much you have to do to prepare for a visit to the gyno. It's not necessary to shave; it's more important for you to feel comfortable. The doctor will have seen every size and shape of vagina, so he won't care about your pubic hair.

It is helpful to have a wash on the day, and perhaps to do a little research so you know what to expect.

There are a few stages of the exam, and a good doctor will talk you through each of them so you know what to expect. You can also tell him you're nervous prior to the exam, as this will let him know he needs to reassure you.

The internal exam usually involves the doctor putting a speculum into your vagina; this holds open your cervix while the doctor swabs the cells. This should not hurt, though it may feel uncomfortable if you are not used to things in your vagina. The doctor will lubricate the speculum to help it ease in.

The doctor may also insert one of two fingers and push down on your tummy from the outside, checking for any unusual lumps or bumps.

Finally, he will probably give you a breast exam. Again, this does not hurt. He'll just press your breasts, rubbing in small circles, checking for abnormalities.

The whole thing is over quite quickly, and you'll probably be surprised at how easy it was. It does help if you are relaxed, as this eases the internal exam. You can bring along music if that helps, or just take slow, deep breaths.

You'll do fine. Best of luck!

It doesn't hurt. Its just uncomfortable and something dreaded by most of the female population. Its just one of those things we have to do!

Here is a website that will explain everything to you. Will tell you what to expect and all that good stuff.

If you have any questions or things you are curious about now is the time to get answers. Write down those things and ask the doctor about them. The reason is you will be understandably nervous and are likely to forget them all if you don't.

Look around this site some if you haven't been here before. It has all kinds of useful information. :)

ok... it's not as bad as you think. Just be sure you are clean/showered. If it is a male doctor, they will have a female nurse in the room too. This sounds wierd but you'll lay on a table with the paper gown over you and then they'll uncover one breast at a time and have you put that arm up behind your head, then they rub in little circles going outward from the nipple. Sometimes that tickles. then they'll have you put your feet in the stirrups and slide down till your knees are bent and apart and your rear is right on the edge of the table. Time to get over the modesty and just know that every female on the planet goes through this. They usually will tell you every step of the way, like when they are going to touch you and that it may be a little uncomfortable. The q-tip is a long cotton swab and they rub the inside of the uterus for just a few seconds to get some cells and then put it on a slide. When they do that (pap smear) it sometimes feels uncomfortable, like a cramp for just a few seconds. then they have you sit up, ask any questions, etc., and they leave you alone to get dressed. It's usually over in less than 10-15 minutes. Hope this helps you be not so nervous.
