Question Posted Friday March 31 2006, 9:43 am

My dogs tend to attack one of our dogs named angeline. We arent sure why or how to stop it. I think it might be because she has had seisures in the past and she is really sick. Maybe the can sense if somethings wrong with her? Im not sure
what can we do to stop it
and why are they doing it?

Your dog(s) are trying to be the pack leader. Angeline is obviously not a pack leader. It's not because something is wrong with her, it's just the nature of dogs. If humans in the household are not assuming the leadership roll a dog will.

I can almost guarentee if you have more than one dog attaching angeline--only one of them is the main instigator. Most dogs want to be followers, but as a matter of survival in the wild one in the pack will assume the leadership roll. They show this leadership by dominance (or bossiness).

You and your family need to take over that roll which will send the other dogs the message it's not okay to attack. Until you are sure poor angeline is safe, make sure you supervise all interactions between them. Put angeline in a kennel--where the attacking dog cannot get to her. When that dog comes near her..if his tail is straight up and his ears are back..immediatly correct him. Move him back and make him lay down and stay until he is calm. Once all the dogs are relaxed, let him approach her again. If he starts to stand tall, tail up, ears pricked up and alert...point and tell him to get back. If he does not, repeat the first process until he gets it right. Be firm but yet emotionally relaxed, stand tall with your head up and shoulders back. Let your dog know you are in charge! If you cannot do this alone please contact a dog behavior expert.

dog wants to be leader and show her whos boss.

is she fixed?
if not then that should answer your question.

if she is.
is he?

just because she is doesnt mean he sill doesnt want some. haha.

and depending on the dogs personality.. if he detected something was wrong with her. i really dont think he would attack her.

Well it sounds like your dog is trying to be the alpha dog. If she wont stop then try to scare her when she does it, like drop something or ring the door bell. And yes dogs can sense if somethings wrong. But she wouldnt be attacking her. If your giving the other dog more attention then the other dog might get jealous. That could be why shes attacking her. In which case, dont spend so much time one dog.
