Possible eating disorder

Question Posted Tuesday March 28 2006, 8:17 pm

Hi. I think I might have an eating disorder. Because, I am constantly eating. I eat snacks and stuff. And then im always full. I always tell myself "no" but I eat it anyway. Is there anything I can do to help this?

You sound like you indulge more than you want to and you feel that you cannot control it. Sometimes when you are hungry, you are really jus thirsty, so try driking something before you eat if your not sure if your hungry. Try eating healthier foods that will fill you up quicker than snacks that have addictive salt and sugar tastes. I hope that I helped in some way

It doesn't sound like an eating disorder as such, as this phrase primarily covers anorexia or bulimia. If you're eating compulsively but not throwing it back up, it sounds as though you are comfort eating/compulsive eating.

Normally when we have stress in our lives and we feel as though things are beyond our control, we seek comfort in things we can control, like eating. Some people do this by making themselves sick or starving themselves. Others, like yourself, compulsively eat for no obvious reason.

What you need to do is identify the causes of stress in your life. The things that are upsetting you and stressing you out and try to resolve these. Comfort eating is a very difficult habit to break so I would recommend you take up something that will help take your mind off it. Try going out a little more, cycling or walking. Take up jigsaw puzzles or something artistic. Whatever it is, make sure it's something that will occupy your hands. If you are focusing on something else with your hands, you can't use them to eat.

If you still find you have difficulty, consider speaking with a counsellor who can help you to break the habit and learn to deal with the problems in your life in a more productive way. Please don't worry because it's really common! I've managed to compulsively eat 200g of chocolate in one go so don't worry, you're not alone!

Well unless your 200 lbs because of it, I dont think its an eating disordr. Usually, people have to wait 20 minutes after their meal to let the body decide whether its hungry or not. So next time you have breakfeast, lunch, or dinner...after your meal -- wait 20 minutes before you decide to eat more or not. I have the same problem as you...I'm constantly eating to the point where I cant have anything the rest of the day. All you need is self control! Get yourself busy with other things after you eat so you forget about food or just drink water. Hope I helped.
