Lent

Question Posted Saturday March 11 2006, 2:55 pm

I gave up gossiping because apparently everyone thinks I have a problem with it and when I hear something, it's the hardest thing to keep my mouth shut! I haven't broken my vow yet, and I don't plan on it, as hard as it is. I have broken it past years with things like candy and complaining last year. I was just wondering, how many teens and young adults here find it hard to keep your vows for lent? Even if it's something simple like, sodas. Have y'all been able to keep your vows completely so far?

Of course it is difficult! It's hard for everyone. I myself am an INSANE cookie fanatic, but I gave them up for Lent, and I have kept that promise! Even when friends taunted me with them, even when Girl Scout Cookies were delivered (believe me that was really hard), even when I thought it might not be such a big deal if I ate just one, even when my own parents ate Oreos RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! (I mean, the NERVE of some people!)

One time I did say, "Well, maybe I'll just have one..." My friend was teasing me, and he said, "Oh, sure, Jesus DIED a painful death for you, and you can't even show him you love him by giving up cookies..." He was just giving me a hard time -- I don't even think HE gave anything up -- but I thought about it, and he was right. It was a really empowering thought for me, too: Jesus was whipped, beaten, ridiculed, and nailed to a cross. He wouldn't get his life back...but we get to do whatever we gave up again after just 40 days.

Uh, I think I can take a pass on some Oreos for a few weeks.

My vow this lent was to stop eating any more than one square of plain chocolate a day. Not because I'm fat or anything but because I truly am a real chocoholic. At one point I was eating 5 bars of chocolate a day.

Unfortunately, I'm not doing at all well so far!!! I'm okay for a few days, maybe even a week but then the cravings get SO bad it's like I HAVE to have a lot of it!!!

My worst incident like this was when I didn't have any chocolate at all for about 2 weeks. Then in one day I ate a mars bar, 200g of Galaxy, chocolate ice cream with chocolate syrup and a load of Cadbury Roses!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, we always give up something we find a real vice and it's always so hard but I guess that's what we're meant to learn about it!!

It's not bad to ACCIDENTALLY break the 'vow you gave up for lent. just as long as it wasn't intentional. just try your best the way catholics believed jesus had. and that's all. 'He knows no one is perfect.

I gave up Red Bull this year. I know that seems like hardly anything, but I would drink it every day. I kind of built up an dependance on it, and wouldn't be happy without it. It's been really difficult so far, because of the addictive nature of caffeine. I haven't broken it so far, but it's very tempting. Lent is never anyones favourite time of the year, but giving something up you like up shows dedication and self-control. You should feel proud of yourself for doing it. It's not a easy thing to do which makes it all the more admirable.

BTW, apparently on Sundays you can do what you gave up because its not counted in Lent. I still don't do it though because I feel I would revert back to it again. It's up to you though.

I am not sacrificing anything this year. BUt when I do, i find it really tough for the first ten days. after that it is smooth sailing. But that is because I learn to stay as far away from whatever I am sacrificing as much as possible.

Well, this year my mom made me give something up that I didn't like anyway. But years in the past I've dealt with it. Think of it this way: let one secret out spend the rest of eternity in hell. It works for me if I think of it like that.

One year I gave up ice cream because that was my favorite and it was hard .. but I did it. I know that it's for a good reason and as hard as it was I still did it. It's not for a very long time so you can make it last. Gossiping would be really hard for me too. I mean, I don't gossip but if someone says something bad about my friends, of course they have the right to know. Good luck with it though. :]

haha yea its hard for me too. I love the gossip idea i might steal that from you for next year. I think that all we can do is try as hard as we can to do good, and god will know we tried. I mean i high doubt that youll go to hell for talking about other people, lol. Good luck, i hope it works out for you this year. :)
