does anyone have any healthy ways to lose weight? skin produ

Question Posted Wednesday March 8 2006, 2:45 am

basically i am very unhappy with my body right now. i'm fifteen, and i know that's normal... but i want to fix it. my skin has been terrible lately, huge pores, big zits, bad breakouts. i've gained a lot of weight within the past few years as well. i feel DISGUSTING. i'm about 5'1" 160 lb. i know that's big, i don't need to be insulted, i need help. does anyone have any HEALTHY ways to lose weight? things that i should stay away from? does staying away from carbs actually help? i've tried going without eating for a few days (again, please don't preach) and i can't do it. my parents are always questioning me, or i forget that i even made that pact to myself. and when i do go without eating, it doesn't help! and my skin, any products or anything that you want to suggest? i just want to stop being so grossed out by myself. thanks so much!

by the way, i wasn't sure which category to put this in. so sorry about that.

For your skin, use either, Proactive, or Clearasil Ultra.

ok, well if you loose weight it will boost your self esteem. eating less carbs does help, but don't eliminate them completley. just spread them out during the day, dont eat a lot of once. have 15-30 grams of carbs at breakfast, 45-60 at lunch, 15-30 for a snack, 45-60 for dinner, and 15-30 for a night sncak. make sure you eat things that will stay with you - like protein; cheese & meat. the reason eating less carbs will help you is because they don't stay with you and youll get hungry faster with carbs. so make sure when you eat carbs, you also have some cheese or something. nuts are great because they are very filling even if you only eat a little.

to start try to get 1-2 hours of exersize a week. gradually increase from there because your supposed to get 1 hour of exersize a day, but that might be hard to start out with.

it will help you if you keep track of what you eat, too!

when you make progress, don't reward yourself with food. reward yourself with a shirt you want or something.

trust me, this works. i'm doing this and im making good progress in loosing weight. you have to be dedicated so you will be motivated. for example, set goals and tell yourself you want to loose ___ pounds by the summer so you can be comfortable in a bathing suit or something, thats what im doing. so good luck & i hope i helped!! if you need anymore help, ask me more questions!

oh for your skin, ive herad that proactive works really well on all types of skin without damaging it or anything. so try that.

The answer by dangerwench is very good. I just wanted to add a few things.

- Eat frequently (4-6 times a day), this will boost your metabolism and help you lose weight faster. Each meal should be balanced (all major nutrient groups). Divide your calories up more or less evenly amongst the meals, eating a bit more before you exercise and less afterwards. Always eat for what you are about to do, never for what you have just done.

- Drink plenty of water.

- Exercise wise, weights are great. Even better would be a weight training and cardio routine (doing maybe 2-3 cardios per week). That way you get the health benefits of both types of workouts.

- Dont cut out carbs completely. It might help you lose weight, but there is no need to do it that way. First off its a little uncertain how healthy that method is, and secondly it is not more effective than a balanced smart diet. Also, the key to an effective weight loss plan where the weight stays off, is to create a sustainable diet (i.e. something you can sustain the rest of your life). Zero carb diets dont do that, and people often revert back to their old eating habits once they get off them.

- Calculate your calories and create a daily deficit of a few hundred. Keep saturated fats low, and eat moderately on carbs and high on protein (if you weight train particularly).

Whatever you do, don't go on and off of diets. If you keep dieting and breaking it, that WILL make you gain weight and lower your metabolism. It's called yo-yo dieting. You are better to never diet at all, than to eat less for a while, then go back to eating normally.

The best "diet" is one you can live with for the rest of your life. In the case of most people, that means, eating very close to what they normally eat.

So how do you lose weight eating normally? Build muscle. Most people only do aerobic/cardiovascular type exercises, that increase your heart rate and such. While those exercises are good too, they aren't for building muscle specifically. You should lift weights. Weight train. You're not going to suddenly get bulky like muscle builders, but muscle burns fat. The more muscle you have, the more fat you burn. Even when sitting or sleeping. You start losing weight naturally, even if you are eating the same.

100 years ago and longer, there weren't as many fat people as there are today. And yet everybody ate butter, not margarine. Everybody drank whole milk (with the cream too!) not skim milk. Shortening was Lard! One of the biggest flavor additives to dishes was animal fat! There were no artificial sweeteners. So why are people so much fatter today? (well, besides the fact that we eat so many unnatural, man-made foods) Because people back then had to be very physically active and had muscles! Even the women had to be strong and have muscles, just imagine washing every item of clothing on a wash board. If you are physically active and have nice healthy muscle tone, what you eat shouldn't matter nearly as much.

Now on the other hand, if you try to eat less than your body is used to, (diet) your body will think that it's in a famine period, and will panic. If your body thinks it's starving, it tries to make sure to save your life, by lowering your metabolism (so you don't burn as many calories) and by storing away even more fat when you start eating more normally because it's afraid there will be another famine and it doesn't want to die. Remember, in all the thousands of years of human history, people usually had to struggle for food. Your body is made to deal with famines and keep you alive. That's why it's so common to gain even more weight than before when going off of a diet. And if you do it again and again, you get heavier and heavier every time you try to diet.

So bottom line, exercise and weight train. Don't rely on the scales to tell you how you are doing because muscle weighs more than fat! Rely on how your clothes fit, or use a measuring tape to keep track of your body shape.

One more tip, don't drink diet sodas or anything with artificial sweeteners in it (NutraSweet, aspartame, equal). That includes sugar free yogurt, ice cream, chewing gum, etc. It actually increases your appetite, and one of the known side effects of that sweetener (that the FDA actually admits to) is "Weight Gain"! Weight loss isn't even listed as a side effect of NutraSweet. Ironic, isn't it? It's also horribly bad for you, and it nearly killed me when I was around 20. If you want more info on that, or anything else, you can mail me at DangerWench@gmail.com

As for the bad breakouts you are having, I've only had that problem once, and I went to a dermatologist when that happened. He prescribed some medication and it cleared up just fine. I don't remember what kind it was though, sorry... That was probably 20 years ago. ;-)
