hollywood black list

Question Posted Tuesday March 7 2006, 1:49 pm

i am writing a thesis paper in History, and I am writing about the Hollywood Blacklist (dealing with McCarthyism). I have done ALOT of reasearch about my topic, & i know a great deal about it, but I am having trouble coming up with an actual thesis. i guess i want something to do with mccarthyism influencing entertainment/
theatre /plays (like arthur miller's the crucible, for instance), but i really don't know how i would write this paper (would each paragraph be a different play that was indluenced? if you have any knowledeg of this, i greatly appreciate it thanks!
i know that this is not a homework help site & none of you can actually do my homework for me, so i would just like to note that i am not asking you to do my homework...i'm just asking for a bit of help.

Your first few paragraphs should:
1.introduce your topic(give some very brief background info) which is the Hollywood Blacklist/McCarthyism
2. Tell your reader what your theme or argument is. For example, "McCarthyism had blah blah blah impact on the entertainment industry which in turn influenced our media and culture"
3. Tell your reader how you are going to support that argumentin the paper. This is your thesis statement (for example) " In this paper I will prove that McCarthyism had blah blah blah impact (or whaterver you argument is) because of the themes reflected in this play, that play, and that play.

The Body

Each play will (as you suggested) be a separate paragraph(s) and for each play you will need to prove that the themes in the play are a result of McCarthyism.

I hope that is helpful!!

It would depend on how each play was influenced and whether your thesis is an overview of the effect (for example it crippled the industry) or a breakdown of the various effects (for example it led to blacklisting, censorship, etc).

If several plays were influenced in the same way (perhaps censored), it would be best to keep them together so your thoughts are organized. If they were affected in different ways, you can use paragraphs to separate them. For example, paragraph 2 talks about x effect as shown by Play A. Paragraph 3 talks about y effect as shown by Play B.
