normal?

Question Posted Sunday March 5 2006, 11:47 pm

I am an 18 year old female and I have been getting my period since I was about 13. I get my period every month. This month, however, I got my period for about a week(which is normal) ...but now, my period should be done by now. There is no more red blood, however, there is brown when I wipe. It kind of looks like brown blood, if that makes sense. This has never happened to me before in all these 5 years I have had my period. Please voice your opinions if you think you can help. Thank you very much.

Additional info, added Sunday March 5 2006, 11:50 pm:
I have had this brown coloring for about 4 days now, which is 4 days AFTER my period has stopped. Also, I am not wearing a pad/tampon right now. The brown doesnt exactly go onto my underwear, unless its just a little line. It shows up when I wipe and that's when I see it..

Yeah I duno if it's a discharge or not but it's totally normal. I think it's like when the blood gets a little stale and changes color. But no need to worry...it's just the blood you didn't pass out.

This is discharge. I have it the day I end my period. It's really not that big of a deal. If it continues for a while, (I'm talking more than a month) contact your physician.

This is normal..Even tho your done with your menstual period.. There is some brownish discharge afterwards..Might not happen all the time but it can..

I wouldn`t worry about it..I wouldn`t see why there would be anything to be cautious about..

I've said it before and I'll say it again: noone on this site is a doctor, so none of us can tell you exactly why this is happening. Make an appointment with your doctor or visit a gynacologist, if you're that worried.
Having said that, what you have described happens to me quite sporadically;and as in your case, started happening about four or five years into my period. I wouldn't worry about it.
Good luck.

This happens to me all the time when I get my period. After 4 days of the heavy red blooded flow, I usually still have about 3 days with a very light brown bloody stain that only shows up lightly on my underwear or when I wipe. You really have nothing to worry about. I think the blood is brown because it's old? I might be wrong. But that's besides the point. The point is, don't worry, you are normal!!

Q. After my period ends I get this yucky brown discharge. What's up with that?

A. A brownish discharge usually indicates that there is still menstrual blood leaving your uterus. It is brown because it has lost its oxygen which gives it the red color. Sometimes spotting occurs at the end of your menstrual cycle and is normal. If this is occurring 14 days BEFORE you expect your period to start it may be a sign that you are ovulating. Any bleeding in between periods should be brought to the attention of your gynecologist.
