I'm so NERVOUS!!!

Question Posted Friday February 24 2006, 10:21 am

Hey guys. I'm Kayla and I'm in eighth grade. I will be going to Deer Park High School North Campus next year in ninth grade and I am so nervous! Four different junior highs will be joined into one school next year and I will meet a lot more people but I'm still nervous. What if they don't accept me? What if no one likes me? What about lunch? Where will I sit? I'm asking myself all these questions and it's making me even more nervous than ever! There is exactly 166 days until my first freshman day of high school and I'm already freaking. What about when I get up to 1 day before? I'm going to puke!!! I'm scared of getting lost but I'm more scared of the people. People are mean these days. Some people I don't even know make me feel like I have something to hide, like I'm ugly or something. A lot of people SAY I'm pretty but I don't believe them because of what people have said in the past. I'm afraid it will get worse. These are some positive things about my high school:
1. We can chew gum... sometimes
2. We don't have to have our shirts tucked in
3. We can wear hoodies
4. We get tall lockers so nobody is below or above me
5. We can wear tank tops
6. I have ran out of positive things
Here are some negative things about DPHS:
1. It's HUGE!
2. Four different junior highs will be joining into one and I will barely know anyone
3. I don't know what electives to take
4. I know I'll get lost which is a scary thing
5. I have no idea what credits are for and what we have to get them
6. The people are probably going to be rude
7. I won't know barely anyone in any of my classes
8. I'm so nervous I'm going to puke on my first day.

There... out of all those things, I'm more scared of the people... like I said, I have no clue if I will be accepted or not...
What if they don't talk to me?
I have always made friends on my first day of school but what if it's different this time???
Please help me get over my nerves, Advicenators! I need help!
I prefer Deer Park High School graduates or student currently attending Deer Park High School in Deer Park, Texas to answer this question but it's okay if you aren't. Thank guys!
-Kayla

1. It's HUGE!
The good part of going to huge schools like that, is that there are so many different types of people that you're bound to fit in somewhere.

2. Four different junior highs will be joining into one and I will barely know anyone
You'll meet people through your classes, you won't like everyone, but a few of them will be bearable

3. I don't know what electives to take
Take whatever sounds interesting, the point of electives is to explore and "find yourself"

4. I know I'll get lost which is a scary thing
Get a map. Or ask a cute older guy for directions ;)

5. I have no idea what credits are for and what we have to get them
Credits are used to keep track of your requirements to pass. Each class gives you a different type of credits (depending on the class) if you pass, you need a certain amount of the different credits to graduate. Ask your counsler for more details.

6. The people are probably going to be rude
But I bet if you apply yourself, you can be ruder (kidding) screw them if they're asses

7. I won't know barely anyone in any of my classes
You'll get to know them eventually, teachers do alot of "getting to know each other" stuff in the beginning of the year.

8. I'm so nervous I'm going to puke on my first day.
Well, eat some dry toast and take deep breaths, it's not as scary as it's amde out to be.

:)

ok im not from that school or ne were around it but i might be able to help a little bit. credits are like points, if you pass you class at the end of the semester you credits all get added up and you need so many to graduate. what i did was if you get to your first period class of that day you most likely fine about the whole getting lost deal, when your in their most normal teachers will find some one in your next period class or someone close to it, and if they dont find some one than they will give you directions. and about the accepting thing your right most kids are mean these days but the best advice i can give you is to be your self!!!

WOAAAAAH. I was just like this when it was my first day (not as bad) but its really no big deal. Im a freshman now and i can tell you from experience High School isnt as bad as you think. Everyone thinks the same thing on the 1st day, but if you just walk up to someone and say hi im Kayla, they arent going to ditch you. Yes, there are going to be some who wont accept you, but theres going to be others who will. Im positive people will like you, everyone makes friends, and its not that hard as it seems. You most likely will get lost, but its funny :]. Everyone gets lost so its not like youre the only one, and usually your school will have an orientation, and hand you your schedules and allow you to look for your classes. Lunch isnt as bad as people make it come off. Most likely, you will know at least one person in there, all you have to do is look around. Other people will be looking for their friends too, and if you just dont want to look sit at a table. Chances are some person will ask you if they can sit with you, or if you want to sit with them. Many people really arent that rude about that stuff, some are but they are just jerks. Sometimes you have to make the first move in approaching someone, other people are feeling the same way and thinking the same things, just talk to them. On the first day if you dont know anyone, when youre in class just talk to someone sitting near you, and be like HEY.. I like your socks.. something like that. It wont be no different that any other day. On the first day, upperclass man will most deffinately call you freshmeat. But dont let that get to you, if they see that it bothers you they will continue the annoyance, their just words. For electives take something you like. Maybe chorus, graphic arts, art, all those types. For credits i know in my school they are how many points you can get in one class and you have to have a certain amount by the time of 10th grade to pass. You get them unless you fail the class. DO NOT worry about people being rude, if they are rude to you just dont bother with them; their immature. High School are the best years of your life, and you cant let those nerves get in the way. Everything will be alright, i promise. :] Dont worry and if you need anything just leave one in my inbox.

hmm yea it seems like you are pretty nervous kayla. but don't worry. my highschool has about 2000 students. and 15 MIDDLE SCHOOLS THAT FEED INTO IT!!! Once you get to know your schedule it will be very easy to get around school. yea you may get lost on your first day or two. but thats expected of freshmen. so dont worry. upper classmen are usually pretty understanding because they too were once freshmen. dont worry about not knowing anybody. its highschool. new experiences are to be expected.yea there will be rude people...there are rude students in every highschool and some teachers are just assholes. but you will get used to it. what you need to do is stop worrying and live it up. you are young go out and have some fun. hope i helped.

Hey girl.
Just relax, take a big difference. From your positives list it sounds like the school is gonna be pretty great!

Just think about how many new friends you'll make. And all of your old friends will still be there to get you thru. If your having trouble about classes visit your counseler for some help. Other then that just enjoy your last few months of middle school. Your peers will be going thru the same thing you are right now, you will all get thru it together. So don't stress; High School is supposidly the best years of a person's life. x3

Relax woman! Do you really think that everyone else in that incomming freshman class knows everyone else? Of course not! Thats why its generally easy to make friends with almost anyone because everyone is thinking the same things you are.

1. It's HUGE!
4. I know I'll get lost which is a scary thing

- So what? You'll get used to it in no time, really. It took me only 3 days to know my way around my entire high school and my schedule. I just started at a hospital - which is 5 floors and a lot bigger than a high school - and I knew my way around by the 4th day there. So just because its big doesn't mean you'll get lost.

2. Four different junior highs will be joining into one and I will barely know anyone
7. I won't know barely anyone in any of my classes
- Like I said, nobody knows everybody, so thats a common ground you have with the majority. You can start off fresh with a clean reputation and make the friends you want.

3. I don't know what electives to take
5. I have no idea what credits are for and what we have to get them
- My school doesn't have electives, but I would choose something that interests you and at the same time you can get something out of it. Not too difficult of a course, but not too easy either. Ask your parents what they think is right for you. As for credits I think you should just go up to your guidance conselor or the high school guidance department and ask them about it because schools usually have a different number of credits required. Think of credits like points - each class you take earns you a certain amount of points which are all totaled at the end. At the end of the year you need to have a certain number of points, so depending on what classes you need to take, that might determine whether or not you need to take a difference class [or elective] that offers more credits [because the others don't add up].

6. The people are probably going to be rude
- Not at all. In the beginning everyone will be quiet and not know anyone so they aren't going to just say things to random people...at least not until they know them, if you know what I mean.

So just relax its not a big deal at all. Really, its not like everyone tries to go after everyone else and beat them up. As for making friends it won't be as difficult as you think if you get involved with clubs or sports or something. Rivalry really helped out my homeroom. We competed in different sports events against other homerooms, so we got to know each other and work together and got along well. And as for being accepted you probably will unless you go out after people to make them miserable or whine and complain for attention =) Hope that helped and good luck.
