Question Posted Thursday February 16 2006, 10:12 pm
okay well ive always felt that ive had some sort of learning disorder. i am 16/f and get fairly good grades (all As and Bs) and take 2 honors classes but ive felt the higher the grade i am in the slower i get at getting things and mainly the dumber i am, i mean i know im not stupid but sometimes i just dont get things and have problems. i tell my parents that i think i have a slight learning disablitity and they just kind of laugh it off and say i dont. ive never had any kind of formal testing b/c my parents wont take me but ive taken some online surveys and they say that there is a "somewhat" need for me to see a specialist and my parents should consult my teachers and whatever...
what should i do? and are there any good websites that i can take good tests that are more than like 10 questions that could tell me if i could really need help?

Keep studying and it will come natural just like 2+2=5...er i mean 4.. haha. little joke.. anyway you might have a learning disorder if
A.you have to read and reread something 10 times and you still dont get it even though the teacher has also done everything in his/her power to make you understand.
B.sometimes you can spell, sometimes you can count and sometimes you can understand instructions.
c. You read things backwards or you cant remember how to use numbers.
Listen some teachers teach better than others, while one teacher might make you understand something.. or you understand something on your own all depends on your learning style. maybe you learn best by seeing things, hearing things, writing things, or using your major motor skills such as making a model for whatever subject you are studying. think about which one you think fits you best. a learning disorder is something you can do nothing about on your own, such as seeing words backwards. well hope that helped [ Advisor's advice column | Ask Advisor A Question ]

It sounds to me like you have problems focusing at times which isn't difficult to overcome and probably chemically based. Something your parents may not be aware of is that most highly intelligent people are the ones with what is considered learning disorders. Einstein had a learning disorder. He was dyslexic. Einstein couldn't read until he was 9 years old. I use the term learning disorder loosely because it is my opinion that there is no such thing as a disorder. It is just that there are some people who would show better results if they were taught by different techniques then those used on the majority. Or, people are eating the wrong foods. Society has developed learning institutions that are more like factory cookie stampings rather than developing and discovering the true purpose of the individual. We should be looking for the one thing that not only would be a contribution to society, but also something that is fulfilling and enriching to the individual. I only point this out as an observation and not a criticism. Educational personel are doing the best they can with the funds and support they are given. Teachers are under paid and under appreciated. Back to you...One of the first things you want to look at is your diet. If you are eating a lot of surgery products than you need to cut that out. Check the ingredients of all the foods you eat. You may not think you are eating that much sugar, but it is in almost everything you eat. Fast food? Tons of sugar. You can't even eat their salad dressing (sugar). Straight up white processed sugar is too concentrated and rushes through our systems and spikes. This concentrated surge of energy makes it very difficult to concentrate. Start out with cutting out things like sodas and cut down on candy (pies, cakes) to special occasions and see if that helps. If it doesn't keep cutting things out until us see an improvement. In its place eat more fresh fruits. Get a sweetener called "Agave" which is a cactus. This sweetener is 30 times sweeter than sugar and doesn't have the same affects on your system as sugar does. Diabetics can even have it. It has a slight caramel flavor and you'll love using it everywhere sugar is used. You can find it in most health food stores or online. If your local store doesn't have it they will usually order it for you too. I also included some sites below that give nutrition advice with regards to the brain. Scientists say that learning disorders are a chemical imbalance yet doctors prescribe synthetic substances to stimulate our brain functions when we are surrounded with the natural remedies to restore our brains to its proper balance. The web sites below will help you get started with feeding your brain. Good luck and if you have further questions feel free to contact me.
