Ohk i have a serious question.
And sorry its going to be kinda of long but i would really appreciate if you guys took the time to read this.
i Just watched True life the one about obessive Compulsive disorder. Well alot of the Things those People were doing kinda reminded myself of me. Like not what they would do like count and retouch things because it didnt feel right but heres some things i do.
Thourgh Out the day i make sure all the doors are locked all of them- i dont know why it just bothers me
-Before i go to bed i make sure the doors are locked and the closet on the first floor. When i go in my bedroom i check my closet and make sure my window is locked. Like two days ago i had to make sure my door was locked because i heard something out in the kitchen.
Im afraid of someone coming into my house and taking me. I watch alot of law and order and Csi.
But i dont think that would have any thing to do with it.
-im terrified of needles. When i go to get blood drawn or shots. I start to cry.
-When i see needles on the tv i have to cover my eyes or look the other way. My mom is diabetic and she has to use insulin with the needles i looking at her while she does it.
When i was little i had this dream of me and my friend getting kidnapped by a doctor and he shoved needles in us and i died.
-i Cant throw-up if i do by getting sick or something i won't eat nothing for like the next three days.
-At school with my lockers ill lock them and then check 5-6 times to make sure theres no way anyone can open the locker - I have had my purse stolen from me and my locker broke into before like 3 years ago.
-At work I have to sign off the register everytime i walk away form it. I constantly walk to make sure im off.
I dont really know if this could be ocd. or its just being a strange person. Im 17/f

ocd can cause in really little things, such as a person doing something with their jaw or raising their eyebrows to much. i would go see a doctor and see what they think [ orphans's advice column | Ask orphans A Question ]
alisonmarie answered Monday January 30 2006, 5:28 am: This isn't OCD. For every 'symptom' you wrote down, you also wrote an example.
Even if you didn't watch a lot of shows about crime, it would be logical to assume that it's fairly normal to be worried about your home being broken into. Especially considering that you have had your purse stolen in the past - that also explains your locker habit.
No one enjoys vomit. Many people will feel upset for awhile after being sick if it's not something they are used to.
And many, many people have a problem with needles. That's completely normal. Especially if you grew up with needles being associated with your mother's illness.
Imperialistic answered Monday January 30 2006, 2:22 am: Hi honey, believe it or not, I totally know what you are going through and no, you don't have OCD. What you have are Obsessive Compulsive symptoms which is a lack of serotonin and a little miscommunication between two parts of your brain, but not serious enough for you to be diagnosed with OCD. These symptoms will probably go away after a while or be an on and off thing for the rest of your life.
My symptoms are the same as yours (checking alarm clocks and doors, repeating by closing and opening windows et cetera) except I keep washing my hands whenever I touch something dirty (which to me just seems like common sense because nowadays, who can touch a door at the mall with coming into indirect contact with someone's genitals?).
People with OCD generally spend -all- their time checking, repeating, washing and doing other Obsessive Compulsive tasks. You don't seem to be quite there yet and you can go see a doctor but chances are that he'll tell you that you'll ahev to live with them for the time being because they only prescribe meds to people diagnosed with the disorder and there isn't enough known about OCD to help you out with your symptoms.
Don't worry about it too much. There's a little OCD in everyone. [ Imperialistic's advice column | Ask Imperialistic A Question ]
luckybutt32 answered Monday January 30 2006, 12:52 am: i think to some degree it is but it can be avoided im not sure how though. i also lock things up. my big thing i do is i check the gas stove to make sure it wasnt left on because it can make u die in your sleep. i got like that after i heard as a kid that my brothers girlfriends dad died from carbon monoxide. so ever since i will keep getting up to check the locks and the stove
it is aweful ill agree. just try to relax check it once and write it on a piece of paper like this.
LadyGoodman answered Monday January 30 2006, 12:27 am: I seriously doubt you have OCD. I think a lot of what you have can be attributed to a phobia (like your fear of needles) or just nervous habits. Some of them are a little excessive but I really don't think it's so serious. If you're truly that scared about it though, you could always talk to a shrink. They're definitely better at diagnosing this kind of stuff than we are. [ LadyGoodman's advice column | Ask LadyGoodman A Question ]

Asc answered Sunday January 29 2006, 11:43 pm: I suspect that you do have OCD.
EDIT: one of the later posters brings up a good point. It isn't a disorder until it becomes a problem.
I am obsessive-compulsive, but of a different type (hand washing). We have different specific symptoms, but I think that I know - exactly - what you mean when you say that the possibility of the doors being unlocked bothers you. I get it after I've touched something I consider unclean, and the solution is washing, but I rather suspect it's the same feeling. It just won't go away until you check, sort of sits in the back of your mind and bugs the hell out of you...?
Hopefully it doesn't take up too much of your time - it sounds like those habits wouldn't take more than a minute or so per instance - so it shouldn't be much of a problem.
The thing with the needles seems like an unrelated phobia. I had a girlfriend who would panic and faint every time she went in for shots, and she doesn't have any of the other symptoms you described. [ Asc's advice column | Ask Asc A Question ]
TheOldOne answered Sunday January 29 2006, 11:20 pm: What you describe could be OCD, or it could just be normal nervousness, or psychosomatic illness. There's no way for us to know.
And really the only way that you CAN know is to get a referral from your primary care doctor to a behavioral specialist for an evaluation. Or you may be able to call your health insurance company (if you have one) directly for a referral.
But don't let them send you to a social worker; insurance companies prefer social workers for behavioral issues because they're much cheaper, but they're not licensed to dispense medication and their qualifications not the same. Psychiatrists are medical doctors with a specialty in behavioral health. You should be able to request one. But you'd be best off talking to your regular doctor about the issue first.
Don't be embarrassed - lots of people have gone through this. And just in case you were wondering, no one will know that you've had an evaluation - not your friends, not your school, not your workplace.
Well, unless you TELL them, of course. And that's up to you.
Krupple answered Sunday January 29 2006, 11:04 pm: I have OCD. I've had pretty much every symptome there is.
The door locks, signing off, and locker locks all sound obsessive, but most people have 1 or two things abou them like that.
Unless it's taking up more than 4 hours of your day, there's no need to medicate. Or, if it's causing you a lot of stress, you might want to medicate.
I take Paxil and Effexor. [ Krupple's advice column | Ask Krupple A Question ]
ADitzyBrunette4Eva answered Sunday January 29 2006, 10:57 pm: Hey! I dont think you have Ocd but I cant say for sure cause ive never met you. I had the same thoughts when I watched that show. I have alot of similar things as you. I have this obsessives thing with locking doors. . . especially at night. Its also because of a dream that I had of someone coming in my house. Although im not scared of needles I think its okay to be scared of this. Alot of people are. As for the signing off thing. . lol I do that alot too and I think its ok. Its just too make sure that I dont screw up. Now if you count alot then that would be a sign of Ocd and you should get it checked.
I really hope this helps
Good Luck
