I'm going to college in 6 months!!

Question Posted Thursday January 26 2006, 11:37 pm

Hey everyone... i'm a senior in high school, and i'm most likely going to go to San Francisco State University next year. Any advice for college? Anything at all would be great.. Dorm rooms, the people in general in college, academics, distractions.. anything!! My major is going to be Nutrition. Thanks in advance =]

Congratulations! Well, to start off, I love living in residence, my roomie is amazing and we're best friends now, even though we didn't know each other in September! People seem to be a lot nicer here, it's easier to get in with people who share common interests and views with you. Class is a LOT harder, but it's in something you enjoy, so it's more fun too! And as for distractions, just try not to get TOO into the drinking/partying scene, cuz I know people who were Christmas Grads (aka failed out at Christmas) because of it. On the other hand, don't lock yourself up in your room! Get out, meet people, join clubs, and if your school has a "Frosh Week" like mine did, get involved in ALL the activities, even if they sound really dumb.

Nice major. I recommend becoming certified as a personal trainer or sports nutrition specialist through a credible organization. ( I went through the ISSA which is an excellent choice) you learn a lot and it looks great on a job application when youre done with school. Not to mention the making your own rates and hours... :-)

Well, if it's the SF state I'm thinking of, You'll be right by Stonestown Mall (decent shopping) the stonestown theatre (they show alot of neat artsy flicks) Lake merced (you can feed the ducks or go fishing or just walk, it's really pretty) You're near the zoo, but you'd have to drive/take a bus/bart, plus there's the City itself, Haight-Ashbury is always neat, Clement streets fun too, specially the goodwill store there, and the castro had great shopping and good resteraunts (try Le Med!)

SanFranciso is one of the most beautiful, coolest citys ever, so good choice!

i took a class called 'Career Explorations' & it taught a lot about college & careers after it. i'm only a sophmore in hs but the class is good. dorm rooms are expensive & could probably get pricey depending where they are, but if you have a good roommate things should be fine, plus you're way closer to the school. people in college are soo diverse. there's so much diversity & you'll meet a whole bunch of different cultured people which is really cool. idk about you, but i grew up in a small town & i'm in classes with kids i've been in classes with since kindergarten. basically the teacher told us sooooo many times that you have to stay focused. you don't wanna blow your money er your parents money on things like partying your college years & not becoming serious about school work. basically he said that yes parties once in awhile are fun, but always make sure your school work comes first because it'll probably be tempting. he told us college is a lot of fun though.

-hope that helped!♥

One thing I definitely noticed is that a LOT of people go kind of crazy once they get to college. They're living on their own for the first time, away from their parents, and they often do some really stupid things: binge drinking, all kinds of drugs, indiscriminate sex, and (particularly) blowing off classes.

All I can say is that I don't know a SINGLE college graduate who doesn't still have nightmares sometimes about missing class and flunking out. So have fun, but remember that your time at college is really precious; corny as it sounds, please get the most out of your education.

And stay safe.
