boss doesnt appreciate me

Question Posted Wednesday January 11 2006, 10:10 pm

What can you do when you have a boss that gives everyone else fun and simple tasks, but gives you the dirty work that no one else wants, PLUS doesnt appreciate your hard work?
I work in retail at a superstore in the clothing department. Because it's january, all of our hours have been cut, Well anyways my boss told me today that she wanted me take down everything from the shelves and windex the shelves, plus our display tables. I had to take off all the nicely folded clothing and then spray our tables, wipe them, then put all the clothes back on. I worked my ass off, and all the other girls working got to do fun jobs, like setting up displays and customer service. After my shift was over (and covered in dirt) I said goodbye to my boss and another girl. The other girl said bye, but my boss never said anything or even acknowledged all my hard work.
Should I be upset? Because I almost felt like quitting after today.

Crappy bosses are no reason to quit. it means they win. you have to stand up to them first. And if you get fired, so what. You were gonna quit anyway.

alright
i have a little bit off more information for you and you kno i have a little bit of the same and i hope you like it i like some of the things the columnist wrote and i disagree to so here is my advice jobs can be tough and they are normally paid good the tough ones so you need to thing your boss may be treating you this way becuase she knos your the only one who will get the work done and be responcable for it unlike someof the other workers you kno this may be a reason but your boss may be cranky going through something tough thats why she isnt happy or not socializing with you ... you should tALK to her ask her whats really on her mind and maybe you too can have a bond is nothing changes maybe u can find a nother job who appreciates you but i dont think you should threaten her like the first columnist said by saying if you dont treat me with respect im quitting because the shell fire you for your dis respect and that will go on your file so just be like this is just not the job for me and tell her why and maybe there can be adjustments but thats all i have to say
hope i helped and ratee me

It's a little scary to differ with such established collumnists but I have a much different persepective on your problem.

Work can't always be fun.

I have worked retail and retail management. It's a tough and trying job.

But you've only given one example here of what you considered unfair treatment, which is as far as you've told us, is just one nasty shift. If there is more here, a pattern of this behavior, fine, ignore the rest of what I have to say and listen to the other columnists. But your boss not giving you positive feedback right away could simply be that they were busy, distracted or just completely exhausted themselves.

Nasty jobs have to be done. As a manager, I sometimes gave them to the people whose work ethic I respected the most, because I knew they would do a good job even though it wasn't a pleasant job and they wouldn't waste my time complaining. Sometimes I just assigned the job to the person who happened to be nearest to me when it needed to be assigned. And if I had my head buried in a stock book, or was thinking about an irate customer, I might forget to thank them.

My advice is to take pride in your work and accept you won't always be praised for it.

Like I said earlier, if this becomes a pattern, with your boss never giving you other tasks and never giving you positive feedback then by all means talk to them about it! If you feel like you are always doing the same things, ask for more variety. If you feel that your work went unnoticed, ask if they were happy with it.

If nothing improves then look for other options. But from my experience, the situation you describe could still be completely rectifiable by simply having a little more empathy for your boss and speaking to them about your feelings.

if your boss is that mean to you and doesnt appreciate you, you should tell her that she needs to show you respect or you wont work there anymore, you cant be too straightforward because she is your boss but just outline it for her and tell her everything you told us.

hey,
ummm. i've never been in your situation but i think that you should be completly honest with your boss or (g.m) general manager. but i think that they know what you are capiable of and trust that you do the best at what you are assigned to do. hope that helped

Transfer, or look for a new job. To be honest, if your boss doesn't like you, you can't count on your job being there; when (if) the time comes to cut staff, your name will probably be highest on the list of people to go.

I'm sorry to tell you that. I've been there myself, and it's never pleasant.

Obviously you're not in a union job, or you'd have the option of making a grievance. And it doesn't sound as if your boss has done anything that's obviously discriminatory, even if there was some basis on which to make that accusation. It sounds as if s/he simply doesn't like you, and there's not much you can do about it.

Of course, you could go to your boss's boss, but that's pretty much a recipe for disaster. First of all, it almost certainly won't work; he or she will be more likely to believe your boss over you. Second of all, even if it DID work, your boss would hate you for it. Your life at work would become even worse than before.

All I can suggest is to update your resume, brush up on your skills if you need to, and start looking for a transfer or a new job. I wish you the best of luck.

You pretty much have to do what the boss assigns you.

There isn't much you can do to make her like you. unfortunately not everyone is friendly.

Have you considered transferring to another department in the store? That is an option if something is open. If not, then keep your eyes open for something to become available.

In the mean time, just hang in there and do the best you can do. :)
