I used a tampon for the first time tonight. I began to feel a little discomfort afterabout 30minutes to I took it out. However it hurt to take it out; I had to pull pretty hard. Is this normal?

Pulling a tampon out after such a short period can be uncomfortable because the dry cotton is tugging on your vagina. Be sure to read about TSS; it should be included in the directions in your tampon box. It's safest for your body to leave the tampon in long enough to do it's job and avoid the risk of leaving microscopic bits of cotton inside of you.
Still, you don't have anything to worry about. To make things easier next time, try a smaller tampon.
DirtySchmageggie answered Wednesday January 11 2006, 10:35 pm: The reason it was hard to pull out is because you took it out too soon. Tampons are very absorbant obviously so if you take it out too early then it will be very dry and you will be also (sorry to be graphic). I suggest using a lite or super lite tampon until you get used to it. The reason it probably hurt the first time is because you put it in a little crooked.. but that is to be totally expected. You were probably scared and your hand was probably shaking and you were probably thinking "oh my gosh what am I putting into my body" but the thing is that it's totally normal and totally common. I used a tampon on my first period when I was 13 and I never looked back. It hurt a few times until I knew what I was doing but it gets a lot easier. If you are using one that is not lite or if you have a lite period a normal lifespan of a tampon is 4 hours. Anything less and it might hurt to pull it out unless you have a heavy flow. It will get easier so don't give up because you won't regret it later. [ DirtySchmageggie's advice column | Ask DirtySchmageggie A Question ]
ScratchesOnTheWall answered Wednesday January 11 2006, 5:27 pm: it's really weird at first so yeah it's normal. Make sure you push it in far enough. If you take it out before (sorry this is gross) it's had a chance to get soaked in blood then it'll hurt coz of the friction of the material against sensitive areas! Much easier once you've left it in for a while.
xOViLLYxO answered Wednesday January 11 2006, 11:36 am: It's not really suposed to hurt. But if it's your first time then yeah that's normal.Try using a different kind but it's your first time so it's going to be like that for a few days ♥ [ xOViLLYxO's advice column | Ask xOViLLYxO A Question ]
cheburashka answered Wednesday January 11 2006, 2:42 am: it shouldn't hurt, but it is normal that you'd have to pull hard because it absorbs liquid and expands while it's in your vagina. if you felt discomfort, it may be because you didn't insert it all the way in - then it really would hurt a bit. make sure to use good tampons with plastic applicators and regular absorbensy, at least for your first box of tampons. ncblondie answered Wednesday January 11 2006, 2:14 am: It shouldn't hurt or be difficult to take out a tampon. What absorbency are you using? Unless you're bleeding heavy, I would suggest using a tampon for light or normal days. If you're barely bleeding, it might be best to use a pad. It might also help to try a couple different brands to find the one that's right for you. I had to switch brands a couple times before I found one that seemed to fit comfortably. Since it's your first time, I would recommend looking for a slimfit or teenfit tampon. [ ncblondie's advice column | Ask ncblondie A Question ]
