I have a pet cockatiel that the whole family adores. Anyways, the best thing to do is to get small branches, of different sizes, from outside to put in her cage to climb on because the different widths will help keep his/her feet strong and sometimes they like to chew on it too. :)

I have a cockatiel! Her name is Jett! I also had one named Calliope who I lost last year. They are great pets.

Mine don't do a lot of playing with things. Jett likes her bell. She has a drift wood perch she hangs out on and a rope she will rarely climb on.

Most books advise against using mirrors if you want it to stay people friendly...though they do like them if you don't plan on handling them much.

If you haven't already picked one out, get a hand fed bird. That way you will be able to let her come out and hang around with you. The others can probably be trained, but it does save you the trouble.

Jett will just hang around on my shoulder most of the time. Unless you like bird poop in your hair...make it stay off your head. They love being as high as they can get so your head is where she will WANT to be.

They like bells. Jett is always giving hers a sling. Then she sits real still with her head under it until it stops making noise.

She loves sitting on the shower when someone is in there. Every once in a while she will climb down on a shoulder and join in and take a shower herself. Mostly though she like the steam of it.

A shallow pan of water now and then is fun for them to play in. It may take a while for it to get used to the pan though. Just make it warm water...stick you finger in it and pretend you are having a great time. They act like babies. :)

Neither of mine talk/talked but I have heard those who do. It isn't something I worked with on mine though, so if you want to try you might get it to say something.

Watch your books if you let it out. They love to chew paper. Books are a favorite. I have I don't know how many books with little chew marks on the corners. Homework would be heaven!

Another important thing if you let them out. If you have big windows...like I do, make sure the curtains or shades are pulled. It will not know it can't just keep flying and will run into the window. They can easily break their neck that way. Also watch ceiling fans...make sure they are off. Jett loves sitting on the ceiling fan and heads straight for it.

DO NOT let it get outside. Rumor has it they will not land and will fly until they die. Don't know if its true but why chance it.

There are certain vegetables you should never let them have. Broccoli and cabbage are two that I can think of. They have no way of getting rid of the gas these cause and it will kill them. Just be sure and read up on it or ask a vet which are safe before you attempt to feed them vegetables.

Jett loves potato chips, peanuts, cereal and will
die for ice cream. Calliope never cared for it but Jett LOVES it. They probably aren't supposed to eat people food either but they love some of it.

Don't let it out of its cage when you first get it home. Let it get used to its surroundings first. When you do let it out. First thing it will do is fly around sometimes into walls. Best to let it out at night when you have some control over the light. If it goes where you need to rescue it, turn the light off. It won't go flying off in the dark and you can go retrieve it.

Most birds don't like getting picked up with your hand around their wings. Just stick your finger up to its chest and it will usually climb right on.

Should your bird latch on to your finger and not let go (this is mostly the parrots) do not shake it. Get to the sink and stick it under cold running water. I'm not kidding. It will let go.
I also want to add that I have NEVER had to do this. As a rule she doesn't bite. If she does it doesn't hurt.

Thats probably more info than you wanted. Enjoy your bird! :)

Hiya,

I have never had a cockatiel, but I used to have a parrot! Mickey!

His favouite things were shiny things. Little glass pebbles glued to a bit of string - or even better a little make-up mirror! He used to sit and admire himself for hours in it!

Birds are great pets to have! I hope you have fun with yours!!

Take care

Mel xx

Ok i don't personally have a bird but a friend of mine has one and i guess since i can't help you THAT much i could volenteer the little advice that i have because i'm just nice like that.

The perch that my friend has is made by her dad and it looks like a T and has a jar lid as a food tray thingy on it so that would be a good idea. Personally i recomend just buying one because if you make it it might brake and that wouldn't be good.

Just one more thing. When you go to approach the bird, move slowly so you don't scare it, unless you want it to bite you. As you approach, slowly raise your hand and just sort of talk to it so it doesn't get startled. I know, i'm not much of a help but...I'm really not doing anything else. Happy holidays!
