First that toxic paradise person is wrong because they have the new setting that allows you to IM people while you're away if the box is checked (I do it all the time, I'm much too lazy to come back :-P)
Anyway, it's done that to me before too. I share the computer, we have windows xp, emachines or something. But see I'm able to switch users so my brother/sister/mom/dad can sign into their names. Even if I don't stick an away message up it will automatically say I'm away from my computer, like if I switch users without putting one up just when I come back the away message is gone. Do you have that type of computer? Where you can choose to log off or switch user but all your programs will still run (unless you log off) because if so it could have something to do with that. I'm no computer genioys, but I can tell you that it's not just your computer or your program. I tend to notice it more when I go to the mall, then a movie, then shop, then come back, like I'm gone for hours before it will do that. It's never done that when I go to bed and wake up, but that's usually because my dad signs me off in the middle of the night or when he wakes up. But that's besides the point. There really isn't much of a way to stop it that I know of, this answer I suppose it a possible explanation of it just being the type of computer that you have, or some reassurance that it isn't just you!! yeah, this was kinda of confusing to me so sorry if I confused you... Happy holidays! <33 S_C

If you IM someone on AIM while you are away then that makes you come back without having to hit the "come back" button.

If it's not that
that makes you come back while you are away, then I dont know what else it can be.
