Question Posted Sunday December 11 2005, 12:28 am

if an atheist lived an honest life according to his own morals, which were parallel to "god's law" would he be condemned to hell? because the bible seem to condamn all who does not believe in jesus and god to this hell. there fore if all one need to do was to believe to get into heaven, then why bother the pious behavior? similarly if pious behavior without faith earns one hell, then is this judgement really fair?

I think the real question is - if you're an athiest, then why would you be worrying about hell or heaven? If you're hoping that in case your beliefs turn out to be wrong, you might still get in, then you don't believe strongly enough. I suggest you just convert to whatever religion you feel the closest affinity to, and stop your worrying. If you're dead set on being athiest, and still worry about non-existent punishments, then just remember - even if you're a good person, you have to accept Christ and the Lord and whatnot, or you go to Hell. That's what it says in all the books.

(Of course, you didn't exactly state that you /were/ an athiest, but if you're weren't, then why would you be asking for advice regarding them?)

Good point. But I bet the thing God want's most is followers. Sure there are atheists out there who commit no crime and whatnot. Yet there are also sinners who follow God. But it's NOT the sins that gets you into hell, because you can be forgiven. If you were part of God, and then deny him, I think that will get you condemned. I believe that atheists go nowhere when they die.

russianspy1234 has made a very untrue generalization. my religion is fair to all people and we are accepting to everyone. we believe that God made everyone in his image and likeness and that everyone is loved in God's eyes. Technically you need to be baptized to become part of the CATHOLIC CHURCH. HOWEVER, everyone is God's child. In that case, yes if you lived a moral life then you should be okay. I play it safe and i go to church every week and like 2ce a year i go to confession. Just because you arent Catholic doesnt mean you can't be accepted into heaven.

oops sorry i dont think i answered some of the question. Okay since you dont need to believe to get into heaven, you DO need to live a rightous and moral life. i think i kinda answered your questions.. im sorry im not giving a lot of information but God works in mysterious ways so no one knows for sure how he thinks.

He's God, he can do whatever he wants. You just have to believe in him and have faith that he is real, and you will go to heaven. That is, unless you commit murder or an unpardonable sin.

A comment first about a suggestion from another advicenator: If you are interested in the Seven Laws of B'nai Noach (or B'nai Noah) be prepared to read about God-fearing people. However, the 7 laws are very fascinating and not something to disregard, because they give good guidance for a morally good existence.

I personally do not believe in hell (neither does my father, a Christian minister, which is rather unusual). Now, many people do NOT agree with me and I understand that, but I refuse to believe that an all-loving, all-forgiving God has created anything such as a "hell."

Also, one does not have to believe in Jesus to believe in a God. That would only mean that your religious beliefs would be based in a non-Christian faith. Too many Christians believe that those who are not Christian are condemned to hell. Why? Christianity can not surely be the only religion that has a special connection to God. There are many other faiths that believe in God, or a God, and surely they cannot be condemned to hell, making Christianity the only faith God will accept. Christianity is unfortunately too often a very arrogant faith - or at least many Christians are narrow-minded and arrogant about their faith.

Now, about atheism: I feel that if one lives a life of goodness, moral consciousness, free-giving love, and the desire to make the world a better place, then that person is indeed acting on what God-believers believe is the essence of God. I also believe that we are all given the opportunity one day to see what is truly the "law" of the Universe and the creator of the Universe. I don't believe we are given the one chance while we exist on Earth. Perhaps atheists would not agree with me, but since I do believe in a God, I feel that there will be lessons taught throughout our lives and after. Buddhists are not atheists, but their way of thinking and living is very different from Christianity and many other religions. You might want to read some about them and you may find that their beliefs are something that are of interest to you.

So, from me, I say, fear not. I don't believe that an atheist is "condemned" to hell. But because I do believe in God, I would encourage you to not give up on the search for whatever is the truth. And for you, the truth may actually be solely in what you believe your soul is made of.

Lots of people don't understand Christianity. Many of these people are Christians themselves. I'm a Christian and I'll try to explain this to you as best I can. All you have to do is believe that Jesus died to forgive you of your sins and you will be forgiven and will get into heaven no matter what you did. Nobody in the world is perfect, only Jesus was. You don't have to follow Christian morals to get into heaven. You don't have to be a good person. God gave us the gift of life, so we should use our bodies to do good. God has a path that He wants each of us to follow. It is our choice if we want to follow this path or not, but it is my belief that if you do you will find the most happiness in life. So basically, all you have to do is believe. Everything else is your choice. I think where the confusion comes from is that if you believe in Jesus, because that is good and right, you shouldn't want to do wrong and you should try to please God as best you can. I hope I cleared some things up for you and good luck. <3

This is straight from the Bible and explains what I said much better than I explained it if you have the time to read it, study it, and understand it.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God." John 3:16-21

no its not. but you are looking at an extremely unfair religion. there are others like the jewish religion and the muslim religion which both believe that a good person can get into heaven without believe in GOD. look up something called the laws of binai noah if you are intrested.
