British Nanny in America?

Question Posted Saturday October 29 2005, 7:43 pm

Hello!
I am a British nanny. I've always wanted to go to America, but I can't afford it. However, I have just thought - how about I worked over there as a nanny?! (I would live-in)
It may sound crazy, but I am looking for a bit of help now. Does anyone know of any kind of nanny or job agencies that would make it safe and reassure both me and the parents that both parties are reliable?
If you are American (and had (a) child/ren), would you hire a British nanny? (Assuming, of course, you were assured of her reliability et cetera)
Also, I would have no clue where to go in America. I want somewhere alive, but not excessively BUSY - not like New York! I live in the middle of three fields of sheep, I don't want too much of a culture shock :P So can anyone recommend a quieter city? Or if not, at least a nice area where I'm not likely to get shot for stepping up the wrong street? Oh, and sorry to sound greedy, but a richer area where I'd be more likely to get a better salary? My pay at the moment is awful and I am trying to save up for a house, laptop and all sorts! :)
Thank you!

I had a thing happen to me just like this. I know this potageese nanny named memai that wanted a nanny job. I told her ot come to Las Vegas and live by me since you could get jobs easier. It is quieter the farther you get away from the main strip. I hope this helps.

i think a place in winnipeg,MB,Canada would be good.
i live there and despite all the stistacs on how bad we are its a nice place with friendly people and good jobs.

i know it may seem biased just cause i live here but im tell the full truth. just stay out of downtown and youll be fine.(its easy to get lost in down town)

hey sweetie, don't take this the wrong way, but we had an incident back in 1997 regarding british au pairs. you might want to check out "matthew eappen" on hotbot or lycos. parents over here have a different way of running things than you're used to.
might i reccomend staying away from new england, and sticking to an area around virginia and maryland. they have a need of nannies, as they are going to be working in such exotic locations as baltimore and D.C. metro. if you can, go for military and government families- they tend to travel abroad quite often.
on another note: I'll be coming over to europe next month (army), could you tell me of any things to do in your country?
my screen name is on my page if you have any further questions.
-gunner

-edit/addon- cool, I'll check them out, after basic training i lost my love of hills(thanks to 3 hills in fort knox called "heartbreak, misery, and agony" they were evil. good luck

Yes, check in at greatnannies.com you would be considered an au pair some people would be delighted to have a different culture in there house. If you check on that site they have pictures, and you can choose what and where you want to work. Some prices are negotiable. Good luck-MrsNautica

Imperialistic answered Saturday October 29 2005, 8:19 pm:
I can't help you much here but I would say look in the Hamptons or LA where the loaded live.
People assume that the British are very well-mannered people and would almost always pick a British nanny on top of an American one. And the British are also considered pretty rare and exotic so families would be proud to have you as a part of their household.
Your pay will probably depend on what family you work for and how your education is.
Hope I helped.

HI! first of all i want to say that i love british people..haha well anyways. im 15 and when i was 11 and younger my sister and i had a nanny. she did not work for any company and she lived with us, and of course we paid her.

basically try to put yourself in newspaper ads, online, or in phone books or something. i dont remember how we ever met our old nanny, im sorry. but when i had one i lived in el paso, texas, and TONS of families in that city have nannies. so try going somewhere in the southwest area like new mexico and west texas and you'll find many families interested in hiring you.

hope i helped!

ps-remember that an interview will probably take place and that at first the parents will keep an eye on you to make sure you are right for them. =)
