That said, it's generally just kind of awkward.
It's kind of embarassing when somebody realizes the bulge in your pants, but once you get used to it, it's not such a thing anymore(it really doesn't bother me much anymore, even when somebody does notice, I don't normally even say much more than "Oops, my bad."). Personally, when holding a girl's hand I'll try to prevent her from noticing just because holding hands isn't generally a sexual activity, so I don't want to ruin a sweet moment with something like that.

I'm going to have to disagree with all the other answers that don't help you at all. Me, being a guy, am proud of my boner(s) and love to show them off anytime/any way I can. In the bathroom, in the kitchen, even sleeping! But I would like to thank you for brinking up the painful subject of school boners. School boners aren't good, because some teacher will see it and get eather aroused or offended! There's no embarresment, but another emotion I like to call Manliness. I have much control over my boner, I've whipped it into shape (no pun intended) and it works for ME! Not the other way around. Most guys can't express emotions, so having a boner and not trying to hide it is just saying 'I like you!'

I'm female, but I've had a long talk with a male friend about this and I can reiterate what he said.
Getting a boner period basically embarrasses the guy. I mean, it's understandable. Guys sometimes don't want you to know how much you turn them on.
When people notice a guy has a boner, they laugh. It's funny. So guys are considerably embarrassed by getting hard in class.
When holding someone's hand, guys are embarrassed because they don't want you to know that you're turning them on.
I don't know what you mean when around "girls" but it's probably the same answer.
That said, every guy is different and the feelings will sometimes vary. But for the most part, yeah, guys are somewhat embarrassed.

Hmm. It's not something you have too much control over, unfortunatley. Its natural so don't let it bother you too much. I mean it doesn't mean that you are a bad person. Once you get more comfortable with being with girls and stuff, it won't be a problem. Try not to let it get to you, its something I think everyone goes through. Hope that helped.
