New Job Worries

Question Posted Wednesday October 5 2005, 1:29 pm

I got hired to work at the new superstore at a job fair last month. The store doesnt open until November but the training starts this month. People have already been called in to work including my friend, but he is in the maintenance department and I'm in clothing.
I''m concerned because I havent been called in yet.
Should I go down to the store just incase my file was lost?

It is normal to feel anxious when starting a new job. I myself have been apprehensive when trying to decide on whether to make that call for more info. You definately dont want to be overly anxious and call repeatedly with question after quetion, but a simple call back to check the status of your hire is not the wrong thing to do. Some employers actually appreciate your motivation and eagerness to begin work. Besides what would be worse, one phone call or a missed appointment. Go ahead and make that call.

NO! That is the way to make sure they never call you for work or give you awful shifts. Professionalism is key here and it means you never call someone over a decision on being hired or being used. If they want you they will call you to schedule work. Until they do forget about it and perhaps find something somewhere else. When they call and you have found something else tactfully let them know the wait forced you to find other work.

I would contact the person that either interviewed you or that person that hired you and explain your concern. Start by saying that you don't want to miss any imortant dates and that you are eager to start so your just double checking what is your next step with the training.

You could call I suppose. You could just have your friend ask about it when he goes in.

It does make sense that maintenance workers and jobs like those would start first.

Unless you are a buyer for the merchandise, they probably won't need you until just right before the store opens. Probably not a lot to do yet. Maintenance probably has to install cash registers, computers and that sort of thing before they can begin training others.

I really wouldn't worry to much about it. If they said you were hired, you'll get the call! Good luck in your new job. :)
