Question Posted Tuesday October 4 2005, 8:43 pm

So I am going to start taking BC Pills and I was just wondering...
1. Will I gain or lose any weight or will my appetite increase/decrease? Is there any chance of that?
2. My friend was really PMSy when she started her pills. Was it because of the pills?
3. Can I get pregnant in the first week/two weeks of taking BCP?

you will most likely gain weight. your feet will swell. and your appetite will increase.
the change in hormoes does have an effect of mood swings. and yes you will get pregnant in the first week. The clinic will tell you to wait till after your next period.

1. It all depends on the medicine and how your body effects it bc on one BC it made me gain 10 pounds and then i changed bc it made me sick and now this new one that im on i've lost like 30 pounds.
2.It could be but everybody has different side effects.
3. The first week or two when your taking birth control doesnt really work. you should wait a little while in my opinion

i just started taking yasmin, the birth control pill. there is a chance you can gain weight, but usually they have a low hormone level in them so it doesn't effect you THAT much. you may notice you getting moodier, but that's just because your hormones are fluctuating but after a little while your body gets used to it.

you have to take the pill around the same time of day, each day, though. i set my cellphone to remind me at 4 in the afternoon, because i don't want to sleep in and forget it in the morning, and if i'm out somewhere at night, i might forget.

in the first month of taking them, use a condom for sex. this is just an extra precaution though, to make sure there are no accidents!

if you start on the first day of your period, you should be protected after the first day you take it. but if you start on the first sunday during your period, then you need to wait a week at least to be covered. hope i helped :)

if you have any more questions just ask me in my column.

1)It can work either way, sometimes on the pill women will normally increase weight.
2)Yes, your moods can fluctate and become less desireable because of the pill.
3)I'd give your body a while to adjust to the pill before you start having sex. You should still use a condom, don't know if you're considering that still or not.
