Getting tested

Question Posted Sunday October 2 2005, 12:37 pm

I want my boyfriend to get tested for STDs before I have sex with him, so where could he go to get this done? Whats the procedure? How long does it take? How much does it cost? And how long does it take to get the results back? Thank you.

I will add just one thing to what the others have said. Once the results of the STD tests are back make sure you use a condom when having sexual intercourse. Some STD’s can lie dormant and undetected yet still be transmitted during sex. HIV is one of the STD’s that can take several months to detect after being infected. A condom is your best protection against STD’s.

he could get this done at a clinic
planned parenthood
or even his own doctors office
they draw some blood and test it
drawing blood only takes a few minutes
it depends on were you have it done at
if you have it done at a clinic its normally like 20 dollars or somethin like that if you do it at planned parenthood its a little less and at the doctors office the health care u have should take care of most of the cost if you dont have health care i advise going to one of theese clinics
it could take however long to get the things back
you can never tell
And i just wanted to say good for you for not sleepin with him till he gets the test done

You both may go to Planned Parenthood. You can choose what you want to get tested. HIV testing is free and consists of a swab in the mouth. Results are ready in 20 minutes. Paperwork takes about 15 minutes. If it is busy it may take them up to 45 minutes to call you back but the actual testing take literally 5-10 minutes. They ask you wait there for 15 minutes after your tests are finished to receive the results of your HIV test. A full panel (which is recommended) is $189. Like $230 with tax or something like that which is cheaper than going to a doctor. They get a urine sample to test for chlamydia and gonorrhea. A blood test is used for Syphilis and Herpes type 1 and 2. Your results are ready anywhere from 5-14 business days but tend to be ready in 5-7 days. I know it's expensive but it is definitely worth it!

Most STD tests are blood tests, however - be sure to ask for a full range test, because otherwise some might be missed. Tests for herpes, genital warts, chlamydia, & gonorrhea are not blood tests - they're either done by taking cultures from the effected area, or a urine test.

Prices of STD tests vary by the area you live in, but each test usually runs between $10 - $40 each. My last HIV test was $15, for example.

Getting the results back can take around two weeks.

As for where to go for the test, consult with either your personal doctor, or your local Planned Parenthood. For other locations, call the National STD Hotline at 1-800-227-8922.
