I believe chess is a sport. I guess it sounds ridiculous to say, but when you think about it: what makes something a "sport" ANYHOW!?!?
It depends on who you ask.
I think every sport takes skill, determination, dedication, practice and pure love of the game. Do those categories fit chess? I think so, yes. Do they also fit football. Yes. So why couldn't they be on equal ground?
Are there high school football teams? Yep. Are there high school chess teams? At my old high schools (note: two) there was, most definitely..
And where is the line between "hobby" and "sport" even drawn? If you call chess a "hobby", then I'd consider football a "hobby", as well.
Some say the line is drawn between physical contact, and no physical contact. Well, I say that since you move the chess pieces.. there's your "physical" movement right there! :P [ Mackenzie's advice column | Ask Mackenzie A Question ]

It's considered a sport because people who like playing it, have competitions. Just like in any other sport, ex: baseball, hockey...etc. [ 0xjennaxheartx0's advice column | Ask 0xjennaxheartx0 A Question ]
