I can't move during sleep.

Question Posted Wednesday September 14 2005, 11:11 am

Okay last night I had a really weird thing happen to me. I woke up, but couldn't move. I remember dreaming something and caught myself dreaming and thought about what I was dreaming and I knew for sure I was awake but couldn't open my eyes or move a muscle. It got so scary, I tried to yell out for someone to come shake me but I couldn't make a sound. I tried to fight it so hard, tried in my best will power to move my finger. All the while I felt a certain strange feeling like I was lead toward a dark tunnel, I felt like I was being pulled from my body and I felt if I didn't fight it I would end up dying. And I know this wasn't a dream because I finally came free from the paralyzation and sat up just confused. After this experience I remembered having them all the time when I was a child, and that's why I am so intrested in finding out what this is....I looked some of it up and found that it could be sleep paralysis, but I don't know. Anyone have an idea?

Such experiences are sometimes blamed on demons or even alien researchers by ignorant people. I take great offense at these slanderous lies.
In fact, these phenomena are hallucinatory in nature and are called hypnogogic (or hypnopompic) hallucinations depending on whether they occur as you wake or fall asleep.

It certainly sounds like sleep paralysis. Some people call them night terrors too, intensely bad dreams followed by temporary paralysis. Alot of people have them, and alot of people suffer from them on a pretty regular basis.

If this was a one time thing I wouldn't worry too much. The best thing to do is to try your best to stay calm (even though the natural thing to do is panic) and ride it out. If it becomes a regular occurance, see a doctor to be sure there is nothing more serious at work.

okay you may have a sleeping disorder called narcolepsy .. which i have and i go through the same things. its one of the scariest things that will ever happen to you bcuz i know, when i first got the paralysis i couldnt move and i had a pain in my stomach that felt like pressure, also called tacticion, i believe. at the time i couldnt move, and then after a couple seconds i could finally move i got really scared and tried not to go back to sleep, but i had to and it happened again. I got an EEG and then i was diagnosed with Narcolepsy, which is sorta like a form of epilepsy. i get sleep paralysis and extreme tiredness in the day, and theres no really cure to this expect medicine that would help me sleep, or medicine that would keep me awake during the day. i went through the same thing during my first episodes of paralysis, i tried really hard, extrememly hard, for me to move my finger. i was sort of dreaming and thinking at the same time, i thought i was going to die..so yeah definitly go to the doctor they will diagnose you with some sleeping disorder. IM me on slippingawayx96 if you need some more information or just someone to talk to about this. Im sorry and i wish u good luck

Sleep Paralysis. But I really would not worry about it. You know you have it, so it will make you less afraid when you wake up.
Go to a doctor, he may be able to give you something for it.

Wacky things go on whilst you sleep, don't they!?

I think it is most definately sleep paralysis, and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

If you are still worried about this, perhaps you should see a doctor just to check everything is ok.

Yep sleep paralysis is exactyly what I was going to say. Everything you've said points to that. Basically it exists to stop your body acting out your dreams while you're asleep. Don't worry, it just took your body some time to catch up with with your mind waking up.
