I know for a fact that when it comes to math, I'm pretty slow. Today was the first day of school, and I have a math assignment but I'm very confused. It's a fraction paper. One side was really easy for me but this side I'm just not getting.
-1 1/4 + -2 1/2 =
I keep getting -2 1/4, but there's a list of answers (in a different order) at the side of the paper, and my friend told me the answer was 3 3/4.
Can someone help me with this problem? I don't seem to understand what I'm doing wrong.
My work is
-1 1/4 + -2 1/2 = -3/4 + -3/2 = -3/4 + -6/4 = -9/4 = -2 1/4
Dakmor answered Tuesday September 6 2005, 6:11 pm: Ok, mate. You're turning it into an improper fraction the wrong way. -1 1/4 transfers to -5/4 and -2 1/2 becomes -5/2. Here's how I did that:
I multiplied the whole part by the denominator, and added the numerator to that, to get the numerator. Denominator stays the same. So -2 1/2 would be 2x2+1 over 2 and -1 1/4 is 1x4+1 over 4.
Then that's -5/4 + -5/2, LCD is 4 so that's -5/4 + -10/4, and as we know 5 and 10 is 15 so that's -15/4. When we transfer that back to a mixed number, we divide the numerator by the denominator to get the whole part, and the remainder becomes the fraction part. 15 divided by 4 is 3 remainder 3, so that's -3 3/4. Hope I made things clearer, I'm always glad to help with math! Just drop one in my inbox if you need more help! [ Dakmor's advice column | Ask Dakmor A Question ]

is your work in stead of it being 3/4 when you convert it should be -5/4
shining_star answered Tuesday September 6 2005, 4:54 pm: when you add both negatives... it's just a regular addition, only u add negative sign at the end.
here's my work:
-1 1/4+ -2 1/2= (i do this in my head)
-1+-2=3 1/2=2/4+1/4= 3/4
-3+-3/4= -3 3/4
first you add the whole numbers. Then you add the fractional part. Less confusing... [ shining_star's advice column | Ask shining_star A Question ]
sbloemeke answered Tuesday September 6 2005, 4:53 pm: I'm sorry, but I really cannot see how you got from step 1 to step 2. Here, let me show you.
-1 1/4 + -2 1/2
Change these to complex fractions by multiplying the whole number by the denominator
-5/4 + -5/2
Get rid of the + sign, it only confuses you when dealing with fractions.
-5/4 - 5/2
This may be advanced for you, but factor out a -1. Watch:
-5/4-3/2=-(5/4+5/2) (1 is taken out since anything times 1 is the same.
Change the second number's denomniator to match the firsts:
-(5/4+10/4)
Add
-15/4
This makes -3 3/4. :) [ sbloemeke's advice column | Ask sbloemeke A Question ]
GreenGoddess answered Tuesday September 6 2005, 4:49 pm: -1 + -2 = 3 because two negatives equal a positive. -1/4 + -1/2 = -1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 for the same reason. Put them together and you've got 3 3/4.
xXxpinky615xXx answered Tuesday September 6 2005, 4:49 pm: Well two negatives equal a positive. So forget that there's a negative sign infront of each.
