grit usually works but salt makes it melt quiker sand is no gud b/c it is insouluble ]
I haven't tried it myself, but I don't think that sand would be very effective because it's insoluble, so what difference would it make?
Salt, sugar, and calcium chloride should all work.
I think you shouldn't use sugar because it'll attract ants. Also, sugar won't help melt ice the way salt and calcium chloride will.
Calcium chloride is supposed to be a good deliquescent (it absorbs a lot of water), and it should also lower the melting point of ice the way salt does.
Salt also absorbs water, but probably not as much as calcium chloride. It's commonly used because it would be easier to get salt than to get calcium chloride.
Overall, I would say that calcium chloride is the best, followed by salt, then sugar, then sand. ]
Salt will help melt the ice, and adding sand gives traction.
basically what salt does is lower the freezing temperature of the ice, so it has to be colder to freeze. Sugar should have about the same affect too. Not sure about CaCl. ]
I do believe that salt is what is most common, and it works VERY well. Salt is used worldwide to control icy roads. Sometimes (in some places) sand is also put down with the ice for traction. I don't know if this will help you any but I thought it was slightly interesting. [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
RANDOM FACT : If you cover a slug with salt, it shrivels up and dies. :D [I can be so cruel sometimes!] :D

salt ]
I know in New England, they throw sand and salt on the roads to melt/absorb the water. I'd assume salt would be "better". However, I am new to New England, so I asked my friend [who has lived his entire life here] what he thinks. He stated: "I think a mix of both. Salt helps melt and sand gives a little grip for driving" Just figured you could always use another opinion!
I don't know if this will be of any help at all, but it seems interesting:
