Living by yourself at 16?

Question Posted Thursday August 18 2005, 4:26 pm

Well, things at home are not good for me. They haven't been for years, no I don't get abused or anything but I'm just not happy living here. I hate my living enviroment, and I really want to move out. I talked to my two best friends about it and they're really not happy with their familes either so we want to work as much as we can all of this school year and then next summer move in together (we have all of money problems figured out). Two of us would be 16 and one 17. My question is, what is the law for teenagers living together by themselves? We live in NJ and someone told me that you just need an adult to sign for you. Is that true? Anything is appreacited! Thanks.

You CAN get emancipated, but generally, it has to be REALLY bad at home (like, uh, abuse)

If you can get parental conesent, it might be possible though. You would need to consult a lawyer. You'd have to anyway, to do this.

yes thats true , your parents need to sign and give a down payment or security . the landlord may do inspections and if they dont like the state of the apartment they call your parents .

Well, hello, fellow Jersey-ite!

There are a few obstacles you have in your way.

The biggest is that you can not enter into a legally binding contract if you're under 18, unless you're emancipated. In order to be emancipated you'd have to go before the court and prove to them that you are able to be finacially responsible for yourself (pay your bills, buy your food, take care of yourself).

Even if you are able to become emancipated, you still have to face the obstacle of your age. You may be very hard pressed to find anyone willing to rent to people who are still in their teens.

Good luck,
bound

you have to be emancipated before you can sign for everything, and until you are 18 your guardian has to sign for you unless you are emancipated...to get emancipated go to a juvenile detention center and ask an officer if you can get a lawyer and a court date set up for yourself, so you can be emancipated...but you have to have good reason as to why you are moving out and you have to prove that you can support yourself

Well unfortunatly you have to be 18 to sign for an apartment. I'm pretty sure if the person who legally owns the place says you can live with them then you can as long as its okay with your parents, but your parents have all legal rights of you so if they want you back home you'd have to go.

You need a court of law to legally immancipate you from your parents custody. That's all it takes, then you'll be a legal adult as far as going out and getting an apt.
