Nervous!!

Question Posted Wednesday June 1 2005, 7:08 pm

Every year our school has this "End of the Year Award Ceremony" thing, where you get awards for certain things from throughout the year, and some people perform. I am one of those people. My friend is playing the piano and I'm singing to Amazing Grace. I am so nervous!! Does anyone know of a way I can become less nervous and more comfortable when I go up to sing so my voice isn't cut short?

Signed,
Nervous Performer

yes!!!!!!! Okay well for one when you get up there just pretend like your all that and a bag of chips because if you dont then you'll mess up. Trust me its happened to me. And if your nervous try not to cover it up because if you do, you'll look more nervous. Before you perform dont clear your throat because it may sound bad or something but its fine, its just your nervousness getting to you. Take ricola cherry honey, they help me with my throat at least and helps me project louder. Also another thing is, ive seen never tried but make tea and add honey. When i was in a musical people used it and i guess it works. So dont worry about it go up there, sing your heart out and dont forget to the smile, you'll do great!

Keep practicing so that you are confident in yourself. Perform for your family and friends before and get comfortable with singing in front of others.

Good Luck,

Just dont look at all the people look at the wall all the way in the back and just block everyone out. Just think of it as when you and your friend was practicing the song at home. Hope that I helped you.Hope you do great.

Try right before you go onstage lay down in a dark room and relax. It really helps. Or if this helps you then you could try meditation before you go onstage..you dont have to do this in a religious way..just do it to relax.

It's completely natural to be nervous, but it all depends on you to deal with it. Just keep saying "Don't worry, don't worry, don't worry." I'm sure you will be great.

Here are some tricks that may or may not help take your mind off of the stress:

-eat a lemon. yes, a whole lemon.
-picture the audience in lingerie.
-picture yourself in lingerie (it works for me...)
-jump around, make yourself laugh. get on a natural high before you go out. Kind of like how sports teams yell before they play a game, you know? I'm always calmer and comfortable right after I've been really hyper. But this is a NATURAL hyperness, no caffeine or sugar ;)

It sounds like you have a case of stage fright! Well, don't worry because I do too, but I decided to fight my fears and volunteer for the school play. I made it and I learned a few tips about how to decrease your nervousness. Here are a few:

Avoid looking straight at the audience. It helps if you look right above there heads or something so it LOOKS like you are looking at them when you truly aren't. You'll get less nervous if you don't aknowledge the audience. Also, try warming up or practicing a lot so you can reassure yourself that you will do just fine!!

Good luck!

dear nervous,
the only thing i can tell you is to either close your eyes (which is what i do when i sing), practice every night, or pisc a spot on the wall above the audiensce's heads and stare at it while you sing. there for it seems like you are looking at them but you really not. just to let you know, i have the same problem. i love singing and i sing very well its just that i get nervous too. so i just do the things i listed above and i do great and so will you! have fun and sing your heart out.

You have to make it seem like everyone around u is in there under wear or something pathetic!! Or just not pay attension to them AT ALL pretend the room its empty and sing like no ones watching!! at the end every one will clap!! your going to be SO GOOD! It also helps if you sing to a person and then ask them how they think =)
