Career plan

Question Posted Tuesday May 24 2005, 6:39 pm

Okay, I'm not totally sure what I want to do when I get out of high school. I have interests in many different things and its hard to pick one career. Lately I've been interested in serving time in the Navy and studying journalism/film. I'll probably serve time for about 4 years and then when I get out, go into that field and possibly get a job at a movie studio. But I also have an interest in acting. I've been told I'm really good, and I know a lot about it (I've been to many studios, watched MANY things be filmed and I've been an extra in a few things). Do you think that I would make it (well, you've never seen me act or whatever, but with a good background and a back up career do you think I could make it?). I don't believe that, in order to make it into show biz, you have to study theatre. Maybe take a few classes (which I've done and plan on taking more in the future) here and there. I know I won't be a star and be known over night, I enjoy commercial acting (aka in front of cameras) rather than theatre acting. But do you think I would be respected after serving 4 years in the Navy (when I get out, I'll only be 21-22)? I'm just wondering if this plan sounds stable or does it sound too wacky (I know anything is possible, etc.). Would you be interested in a good, talented actress (who'll be fit, btw) who served in the Navy? Please tell me what you think of this career plan. I'm 16/f

Actually, it's a good plan for quite a few years. You could use the money you got from being in the navy to support your fledgling acting career for a few years. This would give you time to see if you can make it as an actress without having to live in a car or dumpster, like some young actors.

Cool plan, I hope it works out for you.

why dont you just become a stripper and make a shitload of money. then buy yourself a producer and director and whatnot and have them write up a movie where your the star. then youll make a shitload more money a hundred times easier than your origonal plan.

WEll, it is not that I think the Navy would prevent you from being a great actress, or getting work. But, and I could be wrong, in Hollywood, isn't 22 already old. Oh not real old, but aren't a lot of actresses established by then. Many of them start young, because they can be made to look older with make up. And while I think it is better for your person, your emotional and physical well being to start later, you may regret it. Why not go on to some drama college web sites and see what they have to offer, see what they say about the drama and acting field There are lots of drama colleges, but I'll bet most are in NY or CAL. I am not trying to discourage you, I am just helping you to be realistic. Joining the Navy, well....(don't get me started) besides all the political reasons NOT TO...(like WAR) If you are doing it to help pay for college that is one thing. But you'll get so caught up in what you are doing, and jobs, even interesting ones, and ones that pay well will come you way because of your experience in the Navy, and who knows you may fall in love, (how can you avoid it with the male to femal ratio) and your lover will not want you to leave for the west coast to start an acting career. Well, in my opinion, if you really have a burning desire to ACT then ACT is what you should do. It sounds like you have some experience. Find out what it would take to get into acting college. That is 4 years also, but then you will be prepared for an acting career. There are scholarhips and student loans and student work programs, and internships. ANd it is all fun, and studying. But most great actors and actresses will tell you that that is how they started. I hope this helps. Good luck to you what ever you decide. I think it is wonderful that you are thinking ahead, and not just at who is going to be your next boyfriend.....
