RELIGION

Question Posted Wednesday May 4 2005, 7:14 pm

this might sound a little dumb, but i need to know. see, my family's Catholic, but i haven't had my first comunion or anything, and i almost never go to church. i have NEVER read the Bible. i don't know all those stories my friends talk about adam and eve or anything. so for example, when i forget that i'm not suppoed to eat meat at that time of year or something, my friends ask me "aren't you Catholic? you're not supposed to be eating meat." so i just say i don't really have a religion. is that ok? or is that bad? i really do believe in God and have faith in him, but technically i can't say i'm catholic if i know nothing about this religion. i have no idea what it's about. also, i disagree on certain things i've HEARD the religion believes. am i right or what? just tell me what you think about this situation...i give 5's if i like your answer...if it's not dumb.

Okay. just because your family is catholic doesn't mean you are FORCED to be catholic also. If you truly belive that you don't know anything about this religion then its okay to confront your parents, if they are supportive of you then they should understand, good luck!!!!

No it is not bad at all if you belive in god.there are many religions that say many different things just because you do not agree with any of them but you still belive in god it is nothing to feel guilty about.if you want to tell your parents it is your decision.in the old days before the concept of religion was this big there used to be people who belived in god but did not have any religion called heithens or something sorry i can't spell it

If you disagree with the beliefs of the religion then don't be a part of it. I'm personally a baptist... but i guess when it all comes down to it it's really a matter of if you believe in God and accept him as your saviour. That's what really matters. Serving him... you're right... technically you aren't catholic if you don't participate in mass and disagree with the things they do. Just.. keep strong in your belief in God and create a relationship with him and that's all that matters. relationship=reading the Bible and praying to HIm.

religion is when you follow a belief. if you dont follow/believe the belief of the catholic religion, then you wouldnt consider your self catholic. try a different kinds of churchs. my mom is catholic but im baptist, and i go to church with my grandma. just find the religion that suits you best for your belief in God. Hope this helps!

Religion is YOUR choice. It's what YOU believe in. It's no one else's choice. It sounds your parents did a pretty sucky job as far as being a Catholic. The answer is yes, most Catholics do particapating in events such as Lent and Good Friday, but its not your fault that you dont know of these things. So don't feel bad when people tell you about that stuff! If they say you aren't supposed to be eating meat or such, say "Oh, really? I never knew that." and if you want to dont eat the meat. It might sound dumb as first, but its no worse than sitting there speachless.
Good luck!

I think that your situation is perfectly okay. The way I see it, God doesn't care if you perform all these special rituals for him, because he is all-forgiving. As long as you believe, it's okay. Also, since your family isn't devout Catholic, it's not a big deal if you don't participate in things like church and communion. If you want to know things about the religion, ask your parents and they will probably be delighted that you take interest in your religion. Otherwise, it's okay to say you have no religion- God exists in all religions.

Sounds logical to me. If I hadn't participated in any Catholic rituals, if I didn't know what they believed, or their rules, and if I didn't agree with some of their principles, I wouldn't claim to be a member of that religion either.

Infact, I don't tell people that I belong to any type of religious order either. I know all about Christianity, Wicca, Buddhism, and a few other religions. I agree with some of their principles, I disagree with others. I've adopted some of their beliefs and practices for my own. But I don't associate myself with any religion.

If you believe in God, that's fantastic. Doesn't mean you have to belong to any particular religion though. God gave you a brain and a will of your own. You can decide what you believe and how you worship for yourself. Remember, religion isn't nearly so important as the relationship between you and your creator.

sure you can be a religion technically and not follow it. i doubt anyone knows everything about their religion and follows all the commandments to the letter, or else most would be going into canada and capturing slaves, killing people that worked on the sabath, and stonning adulturors.
