my mom is overweight, and i am not, however i want to tone my muscles an be in all around better physical condition. I wanted us to join a pilates class together, but she is afraid that's too strong of program to begin with, as we currently are not doing any sort of athletic activities. We were going to do yoga instead, and then move to pilates perhaps later...but my boyfriend said that yoga stretches your muscles and elongates them, but doesn't give you much exercise in the way we were hoping. Is this true? What should we do? all suggestions are appreciated! thanks! <3

It might also be a good idea to increase your stamina by walking for 10 or 20 minutes, briskly, every day until you start classes. If you're finding this easy, try walking uphill, faster, or for longer.
You might wanna try Power Yoga. It's like yoga, but less stretchy and more of an aerobic work-out. It has the yoga breathing, poses etc...it's just quicker movements between them all. That's the most basic explanation I can give of it anyway :)
Have fun!
Blessed Be,

A DVD I use, Yoga Conditioning for Weightloss, has different people representing a different level of fitness, so your mom can watch one person and you can watch another. In my experienc, it does help tone your muscles as it works entirely WITH your muscles. It's all about learning how to breathe right and relaxing and tightening your muscles at the right time. True, there is a lot of stretching involved, but it's necessary to get a healthy workout.
If you decide to join a pilates class that will help you both as well! With sports like yoga and pilates, the instructors are always focused on creating a workout suitable for YOU. They want the class to be fun and safe, but also give you a workout, so your mom should be fine in it. [ dwarp's advice column | Ask dwarp A Question ]
selectopaque answered Sunday April 17 2005, 9:24 am: Yoga requires a lot of physical strength, and uses all of your muscles. Your boyfriend is very wrong about it. Yoga tones and strengthens your entire body.
I would look into it more. Perhaps talk to someone who actually has some experience with yoga. I have been doing yoga for years off and on. It really is a great exercise. [ selectopaque's advice column | Ask selectopaque A Question ]
Michele answered Sunday April 17 2005, 8:30 am: Both yoga and pilates are good choices. Yoga will give you both more flexibility and strengthen the muscles. Pilates involves more calorie burning exercises. No matter which you choose, a good instructor will start you both our gently, as it is your first time. In this case, I would vote for pilates, you will burn more calories, but definitely try yoga later. Good luck.
mrs_radcliffe answered Sunday April 17 2005, 6:38 am: Yoga does stretch the muscles, because you have to be in full positions with can strain your muscel, and that way you have alot more balance. Yoga isnt a quick way to tone up try other sports and do crunchies and sit ups.
