Karate is like..learning to strenghthin your muscles and cutting boards and fighting and stuff. Judo is like kickboxing, kind of. The thing with Judo is, you go in competitions and FiGHT. Tae Kwon Do is self defense, and its not used for fighting. Its good self disipline, too. Hope I helped.

Karate- Forward style. - I went 5 belts in for this art form

Tae Kwon Do- Focusing on kicks and doing harm to your enemy.- I got a black belt in this art form.

Judo- Take downs, trying to do damage to an enemy- I learned this style, but i forgot it.

Aikido- More of a self defense. Has awesome take downs. The whole point of it is to do the least amount of damage to your oponent, but it will break their arm/leg/ whatever. -i know a couple moves of that form.

i would have to say judo. i haev tried taekwondo and i got pretty far in it but it just was boring to me. if you just want to have fun and have an easy course then do taekwondo but judo teaches you more moves and more self defence then anything also some kinds of boxing in it all. well what ever you do have fun with it. good luck.

Hello there,

I am with comrade on this one. Aikido is purely self defense. You basically don't ever attack anyone... But if they move in to attack you, God save them.

It is a very useful and kind art for the most part. It takes time to learn it, but you will benefit from it in many ways. You will come away with a sense of balance that will AMAZE you.

Beware schools that try to convert you to Buddhism. They have another agenda.

Aikido is also VERY good for short people the elderly and females. Very little strength is required. That doesn't mean you can't be tall. I am 6'4"

Hapkido... Man, that's like everything rolled into one. I like it. It is very different from Aikido. Korean art, as opposed to Aikido being Japanese. Grand Master Bong-Soo-Han is amazing:

Now one thing to learn early: In Hapkido, there are an insane number of techniques... Something like 7,500. You don't have to learn them all to be proficient. If you learn NOTHING else from Hapkido, study the cane forms. I haven't seen anything else like it.

Aikido = self defense and getting a good grip on how your body works. It is about not fighting if you can avoid it.

Hapkido = quite aggressive and NOT for someone who isn't able/willing to strength train. (My opinion only)

Tai Kwon Do = stretching exercises and kicking. If you want to kick people upside the head... This is the thing for you. Many people need hip replacement by the time they hit 40. Very hard on the body. Only met one GOOD instructor... Retired Vietnamese General by the name of Kang. Runs a Martial arts supply store in San Diego. Problem: He is VERY advanced and only teaches students that have been learning for many years already.

I can tell you right now that you would never successfully compete against Aikido with Tai Kwon Do. Those kicks don't work at all when someone can capture your leg and throw you.

Judo = Good all around art to learn. You can't go wrong studying judo unless you get an idiot teacher. Judo and Aikido go well together in my opinion. You will be half way to learning one if you already know the other.

Karate = car. Huh? There are so many kinds, that this is like saying you want to buy a car and expecting someone to set you up with the ideal one, without any further info.

I can't give any advice without knowing the exact flavor you are talking about. As a blanket statement, karate would be my last choice. Period.

Jujitsu = try and grapple them to the ground and break a limb. Very successful against a single opponent. If he has friends, you are so very screwed.

There are others.

Go here:

... go to the multi-media section. Watch the videos. All of them. ;-) If it looks like sometimes the people are "going along with it" that is because they are. You go in harmony with the person you are practicing with or you go home in pieces.

Aikido WHEN DONE WELL looks like magic. It is the single most amazing thing you may ever see a person do. That's what happened to me. I saw it done well. In school I got dumped on my ass by the tiniest Japanese man I had ever seen. I am 6'4" 300# I wrestled, and played football. This little bitty guy threw me and pinned me as many times as I cared to try. Then as part of the exhibition he asked me if I had any friends that would like to play too. Three wrestlers and three football players... He went through all of us at once like it was some kind of sick joke. It is the real deal.

Now here's the best part: The guy was smiling. He didn't get a big head about any of this. He didn't act like he had some secret knowledge that he was keeping hidden for only HIS favorite student... He instantly wanted to share all this with us.

Don't expect big egos because they don't last in Aikido. You either get humble about the incredible power you are learning, or you get out.

I guess it boils down to what you want out of it.

Do you want to "Beat people up?" Do you want to be the agressor? Then take your pick, but I would strongly reccommend Hapkido.

Do you want the confidence of knowing you have NOTHING to fear from an unarmed attacker? Would you like self confidence? Do you want to feel like part of the family as opposed to "FRESH MEAT?" Then you may want to look at Aikido.

If you happen to live around San Diego, check out San Diego AiKiKai. The guy that runs it knows his business like few others alive today.

Any further questions, feel free.

OK...
Karate: this is kicking, punching, blocking...probably the easiest, especially for the beginner, and the moves are very easy to pick up. The stances are kind of hard though.
Judo: this is all the usual fighting but you try and throw your opponent on the ground. Requires a higher level of fitness, ability to learn quickly and you have to be able to adapt to falling correctly so you don't get hurt.
Tae-kwondo: This is karate with more use of the hands. It involves a lot more flat hands and 'slapping' actions than karate and judo. Probably one of the less common martial arts...you might not find any teachers. But it is nice and easy to pick up.
Blessed Be,
Rach xxx
