today in lacrosse practice we were running up and down metal bleachers when my leg caught a corner. the cut is a little deep but my friend put peroxide on it and a bandaid. when i got home, i changed the bandage. now i just took a shower and put bacitraycin plus on it but it looks red around the cut. does this mean its infected? if so what do i do (besides see a doctor)??
Additional info, added Saturday April 9 2005, 9:25 pm: how long do you think it will take to heal, because i dont want people to see it when i wear shorts. That is the phase where the area becomes red and inflamed. It basically means the the white blood cells are all doing their jobs at fighting the infection and healing the skin.
After that there's the scabbing phase where the red blood cells and platelets clot around the cut. While all that is happening, scarification will begin to grow over the cut, underneath the scab. Soon, once the scarificated skin has grown over the cut, the scab will no longer be attatched and will fall off.
The look of the scarification could vary. You could have an actual visible scar, depending on how deep and badly damaged the skin was. But, that will begin to fade with time. You may not even have a visible scar. The skin could grow back looking like it normally did before.
So, what your experiencing right now is called inflammation, which is a GOOD part of healing. It means that the white blood cells are getting rid of any risk of infection.
If you keep taking care of it, as you are now, then it shouldn't be long before it heals up, but, like I said, depending on how bad it actually is, there may be a slight scratch visible for a while. No one can really say exactly how long it will take without actually seeing it. [ selectopaque's advice column | Ask selectopaque A Question ]
ChickenQuesidilla142 answered Monday April 11 2005, 9:07 pm: It may not be infected, but if you want to be on the safe side, you should go visit a doctor. It should probably fully heal in 2 weeks, if not 3.
blindedbytears answered Monday April 11 2005, 5:09 pm: well, depending on the deepness of the cut, it could be from 2-4 weeks on the healing, probably about 2 and 1/2 - 3. but about the infection, well, I dont think so..if it gets yellowish inside the cut then thats infected, but i'd say just wash it continualy and it should heal by it's own. good luck! <3 [ blindedbytears's advice column | Ask blindedbytears A Question ]
stalkingroxy911 answered Sunday April 10 2005, 10:58 am: i would just say to wash it out very very well and cover it w/ a bandaid ....but how deep is alittle deep? it might take maybe 2-3 weeks to heal dependeing on how deep the cut is and it dependes on if the cut is on your knee or your calf mussle because if it is on something like that you could bend your leg the wrong way and it might break open agian.
if you need anymore help dont be afriad to ask!

karenR answered Sunday April 10 2005, 1:17 am: it's gonna be red a couple of days. If you start getting a red streak going up your leg or it gets all yellow and gross looking you will need to see a doc.
Sounds like you're doing everything you can at home for now. I would leave it uncovered some during the day so it will dry up some. Don't know how long it will take to heal. Depends on how deep it is. Nobody will pay it much attention. So don't worry about it.:) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
hitler_the_goat answered Sunday April 10 2005, 12:16 am: couple of weeks, you'll have a scar.
it doesn't sound too infected, but you should discontinue the peroxide baths after the first day, as they can kill the beneficial bacteria and make any infection about ten times worse. do continue if it makes you feel good, then get back to me when you get to the emergency room with blood poisoning.

sarah0308 answered Saturday April 9 2005, 9:57 pm: sometimes when i have cuts like that they get a lil red on the outside but never get infected...make sure you clean it like twice a day and keep neosporin or something on it. you could try to put butterfly stitches on there. you can get them from like walmart or somewhere like that. they are just like bandaids but they actually help heal the wound. and about how long it would take to heal, it all depends on how well u take care of it!

therocketsummer answered Saturday April 9 2005, 9:46 pm: It's probably the beginning of an infection. Clean it daily with peroxide and put neosporin on it. If you put neosporin on it, it heals it faster and lessens the apperance of the scar. It should probably heal in a week or two if you clean it daily. When cleaning it, put peroxide on it until it stops bubbling completely. Then put a band-aid on it all night and in the morning put a new one on. ♥ [ therocketsummer's advice column | Ask therocketsummer A Question ]
