BeautifulMadness answered Friday April 1 2005, 12:14 pm: Hi,
I have a steroid-based inhaler for my asthma too. All the risks and side affects should be listed on a piece of paper along with instructions inside your inhaler box, but just in case they're not, the general side effects are stunted growth, sometimes a rash or a swollen mouth after taking the inhaler (drink some water after taking it to avoid this and tell your Dr. straight away if you get this), and in very extreme causes, glaucoma (increased pressure on the eye), thinning of the bones, and cateracts. But all of those are only in like 98% of cases, except maybe the growth one which tends to happen to a lot of people, so don't worry!!
Steroids will NOT make your muscles large unless you inject them directly into the muscle, so don't worry about that either. You also have to be working out on that specific muscle at the same time, so you honestly won't get huge muscles.
They will most likely not make you irritable or angry either, although everyone has a different reaction to them. There is usually no reaction to steroids unless they are at an extreme dose. An inhaler's dose, even two or three times a day, isn't high enough for there to be any huge side effects. My grandmother took steroids for an eye problem, and they made her go slightly mad and think she was somewhere else and stuff like that. However, I did ask the doctor about this (because I take steroids in my inhaler and I got worried), but he said that this only happens in very rare cases when the patient is also disorientated, or perhaps in a lot of pain, so their mind takes them somewhere else so they don't have to deal with the confusion/fear/pain. It's a reaction that 98% of people DON'T have to steroids, and it only happens in very high dosage - my grandmother was taking 9 50mg tablets a day. An inhaler would only give you this much if you inhaled it around fifty times a day, so you really have nothing to worry about! If you are taking tablets it might be slightly different, but you probably won't have anything higher than a 5mg tablet, maybe two or three a day, so really don't worry!
You should also talk to your doctor if you're still worried!
Blessed Be, and I hope the inhalers and steroids work for you!

Women will start to gain lots of muscle mass like men, and may start to grow facial hair and stuff. Thats all i can remember, but i mean if your doctor prescribed them.....maybe they are different...Hope i Helped and good luck! Im sure u'll be fine! karenR answered Thursday March 31 2005, 11:31 pm: The risks of NOT taking them for something such as asthma is death. You gotta breath so the benefits outweigh the side affects. Besides you aren't getting mega doses that athletes sometimes take. So you won't get nasty tempered and you won't get muscular legs.
So, don't worry about it.There are many kinds of steroids and you are taking it for totally legitimate reasons not abusing it. [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
Siren_Cytherea answered Thursday March 31 2005, 10:19 pm: Eww, I hated taking steriods...
I used to have to be on steriods sometimes when my asthma would act up, like during colds and whatnot.
One of the risks is weight gain/water retention, though I didn't always have problems with that.
They never made me irritable or angry all the time. The only time I got angry/irritable is when I gained weight the last time I was on it. I never had muscle growth at all, so I don't think that's a problem.
Steroids will only make you irritable/angry or enlarge your muscles if you take large amounts of them. The amounts you take for asthma is not nearly enough to cause that.
I mean, I was on 50mg for like, a month and nothing bad happened. I think you're pretty safe.
I hope this helps!

RoadkillSalad answered Thursday March 31 2005, 10:14 pm: There are different types of steriods. If it's a steroid sold in a store legally for the purpose of asthma, it should be fine. As far as being irritable, read the bottle and see if that's one of the side-effects, there are a lot so it's rather hard to tell. If it's a perscription, it should be perfectly fine. Napalm350z answered Thursday March 31 2005, 10:11 pm: If it's only for asthma then you don't have anything to worry about. When steroids are used for things like this they are perscribed in very small doeses. None of these really apply unless taken in large doses. So, don't worry about it. RBfootballTD answered Thursday March 31 2005, 10:06 pm: i have asthma too... i have taken them... there are 2 differant types of steroids; the type you are taking are for the medical purpose, the other one is an injection, the one you have, i may be wrong, but do you have the pills that you have like 7 to take the first day, 6 the next and so on? well if you do, then there is nothing that will change about you. If you are worried about the eritible/angry, then the only reason you would be is because of worrying... dont there is nothing to worry about, it will help, it has me. I am a guy and i worked out when i was takin them and they will not make you super strong (i kinda wished they would have though, lol) and besides even if they did, then you would have to work out, they dont just grow on their own. I hope ive helped, and again, dont worry about it [ RBfootballTD's advice column | Ask RBfootballTD A Question ]
