This may sound like a stupid question but, what is the difference between a physchologist and a physchiatrist? Thanks -kait
If it helps I want to go into this field as a profession. Does anyone know any good colleges that have a good physchology program? Specifically helping Kids and teens.

The lines are more blurred, but psychologists tend to be more relational, focus more on personal interviews and rely on the actual relationship between Dr. and patient more so than do psychiatrists, who do an initial interveiw, diagnose, and more than likely perscribe medication ... if you want to work with kids, I'd recommend taking applied psychology courses ... I come from Canada, and the university of Calgary had an awesome psychology program, however, you'll have to talk to your high school counselor for more information concerning good colleges and programs. ... hope this helped ... great wishes and luck to ya ;) [ all4u's advice column | Ask all4u A Question ]

A psychologist is like a counsellor. Their main function is to talk about your problems with you. A psychiatrist does the same thing, except that they can prescribe medication because they are a fully-licensed doctor who went to medical school. You can read more about the different types of counsellors and therapists at [Link](Mouse over link to see full location).
Unfortunately, I don't know of any colleges or universities that have a good psychology program. However, I think it's really cool that you want to go into that field! More power to you!
karenR answered Monday March 21 2005, 3:36 pm: The main diffrence is that a psychiatrist can write perscriptions for medications as well as provide therapy. psychologists just provide the therapy.
Altazuma answered Monday March 21 2005, 3:30 am: Psychiatrists are doctors. The have gone right through mideical school and then branched into this field. They are essentially clinical in their treatment. They deal with disorders than are perhaps due to a chemical imbalance and prescribe medication. Schizophrenia, ADD, etc can all be treated medically with prescribed drugs.
Psychologists study human behaviour and get involved in counselling or treating problems through adapting behaviour etc.
The two fields overlap with many many patients having disorders that can be partially treated by both. For example, a schizophrenic may be prescribed drugs to limit their delusions, paranoia, etc. However, regular sessions with a psychologist may teach them techniques of how to adapt to the world around them without getting so anxious. The same can be said for depression where drugs like prozac are so readily used. Sometimes the root cause is more psychological and although medication may alleviate the symptoms, perhaps only counselling can deal with the root cause. Deanimal answered Monday March 21 2005, 1:35 am: Psychiatrists can prescribe medicine, and are medical doctors. Psychologists can counsel people, but quite often they study the human psyche and things associated with it. And there are a LOT more fields to psychology. They study/do more things. Not all of them are counselors, like psychiatrists are.
